South Waterfront Summer SOLVE Cleanup

Do Mother Nature a much-needed favor by volunteering at the SOLVE South Waterfront Summer Cleanup on Saturday July 27th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm!

One of the most impactful ways to help keep our neighborhood clean is through hosting SOLVE Cleanups. SOLVE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “bring Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a legacy of stewardship.” SWCR has been a longtime partner of SOLVE and we are proud to be working with them again this year to host four local neighborhood cleanups throughout 2019.

Our first 2019 South Waterfront SOLVE Cleanup took place this past winter in February. Despite the chilly temperature, 75 enthusiastic volunteers took to the South Waterfront streets and were able to collect 825 pounds of trash in just under two hours.

Just like our winter cleanup, the focus of the 2019 South Waterfront SOLVE Summer Cleanup is to remove trash, cigarette buds, and other types of litter found throughout the neighborhood. Volunteers of all ages are welcomed to help. However, those 17 years old and younger must have a parent fill out a Youth Volunteer Waiver. Youth Waivers can be found at:

As per usual, all volunteers will be provided with doughnuts courtesy of SWCR as well as warm coffee from Starbucks at CSLB.

So come keep the neighborhood clean and green by meeting us on Saturday, July 27th at 10:00 am at the South Waterfront Community Relations office located at 3715 SW River Parkway. Remember to bring your hat, gloves, and rain gear as appropriate. SOLVE will supply trash bags, safety vests, and latex gloves.

Registration prior to the event is not required but is highly encouraged. You can register online at:

The Portland Aerial Tram will be shut down for haul rope maintenance from July 2nd to July 7th, resuming operations on July 8th.

July Aerial Tram Closure

From July 2nd to July 7th, the Portland Aerial Tram will be shut down for haul rope maintenance. Wondering what exactly is a haul rope and why does it require maintenance?

According to Portland Aerial Tram, each tram cabin travels along two cable “tracks” with a moving haul rope between them that pulls the cabin along. The Portland Aerial Tram regularly maintains this essential rope when the tram is closed on nights and during weekends, but the haul rope needs to be replaced approximately once every two years.  With more than 21,800 operational hours and 325,000 tram trips logged, it’s fair to say that this particular component is nearing the end of its rope and needs to be replaced.

While the maintenance work is conducted, the upper Tram terminal elevator and upper platform will be closed to ensure public safety. Additionally, Portland Aerial Tram is offering free shuttle rides for employees and patients during the Tram’s normal operating hours, making stops at the Whitaker Lot and the Kohler Pavilion turnaround. The shuttles are
ADA accessible, but Portland Aerial Tram says that anyone needing ADA access and transportation will need to speak to an attendant for assistance.

The shuttle will operate July 2nd, 3rd, and 5th from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will be no shuttle service offered on the 4th of July, Saturday July 6th, or Sunday July 7th. Portland Aerial Tram recommends that commuters add as much as 30 minutes to normal commute times and that they should expect wait times to be about 10-15 minutes at each of the stops. If it is possible, Portland Aerial Tram also encourages commuters to not plan meetings or appointments on the hill and at the South Waterfront on the same day during the tram closure.

For more information about this closure, please refer to this webpage:

Please plan ahead for this closure and know that the South Waterfront’s treasured tram will be back to fulfill the transportation needs of our community by Monday July 8th at 5:30 a.m.

Arist Repertory Theatre Moves to Zidell Yards

This past June, the South Waterfront became the new creative hub for one of Portland’s premier playhouses, Artist Repertory Theatre, more commonly referred to as Artist Rep. Last April, Artist Rep announced that it would be moving out of half of its SW Morrison Street location and remodeling the other side. During the remodeling process the theatre group has moved its office headquarters to a 10,000-square-foot office space located at Zidell Yards here in the South Waterfront, with upcoming performances scheduled at various venues around town. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a potential pop-up performance in the South Waterfront!
