Ron's Reflections: A Message from the Head of School
The Orinda Academy community is fortunate to have teachers who are dedicated to our mission and vision and invested in the academic and emotional growth of all of our students. The faculty work as a collaborative team to assure each student's success, spending a great deal of time in meetings discussing individual students and how we can best meet their needs. Our teachers wear many hats because they also facilitate clubs, teach enrichment electives, provide excellent week long Educational Adventures programs, and are grade-level advisors. Several teachers teach PE classes, drive shuttles, supervise the lounge and study hall, and shepherd students through the often turbulent emotional struggles of their teenage years. I am grateful for the dedication and care for our students that they demonstrate every day. Thank you, teachers!
I would also like to thank the parents for their support and appreciation of the entire staff, and especially Laura Cottril for providing the delicious snacks for the teachers this week.
End of Year Conferences
End-of-the-year conferences for parents and students will be held from 1-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, and from 9 a.m. to NOON on Wednesday, June 14. Please call the office or email Barbara (firstname.lastname@example.org) to schedule a convenient time with your student's advisor. We will discuss progress and achievement for this year, placement for next year, college preparation, goals, and answer any questions you may have. We don't schedule conferences for seniors unless you specifically request one. Just ask!

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL
Friday, May 5 our arts department featured visual and performing arts talent for two performances and vistual art display at the Orinda Library. The show was, as usual, fantastically entertaining! Thanks to art teacher Andy, drama teacher Kathy, dance teacher Samantha, and music teacher Molly for wrangling a great group of kids into a marvelous showcase of student talent. Extra special thanks to Molly: in addition to directing the music groups, she coordinated and produced the entire event and directed both performances. Thank you, Molly!
Soap! Chemistry classes made soap, experimenting with various components to create custom blends, while learning about acids and bases and proportions of ingredients and their effects on a final product.

8TH GRADE ENGLISH
8th graders just finished reading chef Marcus Samuellson's memoir Make it Messy and had fun cooking food from both parts of Samuelsson's heritage: Ethiopia and Sweden. They made raggmunk (potato pancakes), Swedish meatballs, doro wot (spicy chicken), and messer wot (spicy lentils). The kitchen STILL smells good! Oh, and if anyone is looking for lingonberry jam--IKEA will hook you up!
