Happy Lunar New Year!
Our Cultural Inclusion Association sponsored a community celebration of the Lunar New Year. Students wore red, the Community Room was decorated, and there was FOOD! Happy Year of the Rat, everyone!
New Furniture is Here!
Moving days were successful and our new classroom furniture is in place. It's great - come check it out when you have a chance! Huge thanks to Thomas Dean for spearheading the student effort to get the old furniture moved out on Tuesday (and for handling the table with all the gum...ew!) and to Bekah for being an awesome co-mover, along with many others who moved a chair or table along the way.
Field Trip Day
Tidepools, a private movie screening, and an art museum with a side trip to a farmer's market - great day for furniture moving! The 10th graders were too busy looking at all the cool art to pose for photos, but we hear that it was a great trip into the city for culture, art, and history.
B-Cram - 2-Week Summer Chemistry Program
B-Cram (Berkeley Chemistry Research Academics and Mentoring) hosts a 2-week summer program for 9th-12th grade high school students interested in the study of chemistry. Students live on campus, study in Cal's chem labs, hang out with researchers, and learn tons of chemistry. If you're interested, take a closer look HERE, and see Megan for more details and encouragement.
Big Data Bootcamp
Students interested in data science can apply to participate in this FREE eight-week program (held on Saturdays beginning in late February) hosted by Big Data at Berkeley, a student-run organization at Cal. There's still space in the program, and if you want help registering or more information, check out the website or see Megan for details. Students will learn programming in Python, tables and functions, conditional statements, and more. Apply by February 12 at THIS LINK and get more information on the program on the Big Data website.
Lamorinda Visual Arts Competition-Register by January 30 to Enter
The Lamorinda Arts Council has opened registration for the 17th annual Lamorinda Visual Arts Competition for students who live and/or attend high school in the Lamorinda area. All students are invited to enter a piece (or more; there are for categories and students may enter once per category) and have been given more information in art and photography classes. Any student may enter, even if they are not currently enrolled in a visual arts class. There is no cost to enter, and there are cash prizes in each category and a best of show prize. Due dates: students must register online by January 30, and have their art ready to deliver to the library by February 3. More information can be found at the contest website. There will be an artists and friends reception on February 11, open to the public, where the category winners will be revealed. The art will be on display through the month of February in a lovely gallery. Any student interested in participating may consult Tess or Janet, or see Laura for help with registration.
