Serving Side By Side

This month, a team from First Lutheran Church of Fargo, ND – a church which has been instrumental in our beginning years and continued partnership with Casa Gabriel - came to do work projects and VBS at El Refugio with Jim and Suzy Olsen. They specifically asked if the Casa Gabriel boys would like to join them so they could do this outreach together. The team came to Casa Gabriel and played soccer with the boys on a Sunday afternoon, taking the boys back to El Refugio with them that night. The plan was to do projects together on Monday and for the boys to return home on Monday or Tuesday. However the team and the boys worked together so well, they asked for more time together. The boys stayed until Wednesday night, pitching in with every work project and VBS activity. That evening after dinner, Moises shared his testimony with the team. It was the first time he had shared all of his story, voluntarily and in completion. It was clear that in those few short days, the boys had felt accepted and safe. The next Sunday, the team was able to go back to Casa Gabriel and get the boys so that they could all go downtown to visit Old Quito together.  It was a great way to say goodbye, at least for now. A surprise which happened that week: one of the original boys who lived at Casa Gabriel years ago, Daniel, came to visit Casa Gabriel and decided to go with Phil out to El Refugio to pick up the boys. A woman on the team recognized Daniel from years ago.
"I didn't know if I'd ever see you again," she said, tears in her eyes. “I’ve shared stories about you with a lot of people and we’ve prayed for you. It’s so good to see you again.” Daniel beamed with the realization that he had been remembered after so many years.

Maybe in the future there will be similar reunions with our current boys and this team or others who visit. Making a difference can sometimes only take a moment. Thank you so much to First Lutheran Church and Suzy and Jim Olsen and the rest out at El Refugio for taking the time to come alongside our boys. From far or near, such as in being a part of our Spiritual Family who prays for the boys and sends them notes of encouragement, or give financial support, or comes with a team, or simply takes the time each month to read these updates and pray for the boys and our team, it makes a difference.
