July and August in Portland

Record-breaking highs made us think we were back in Athens

During a summer with weeks of temperatures over 100 degrees, we were involved in community cook-outs, a facilitated community discussion group with Ethiopians and Eritreans, Bible studies, friends and relatives visiting, preaching locally and virtually, discipleship groups, mentoring, chairing a steering committee, leading a marriage group, networking, and leading Team Meetings.  In other words, pretty much life as usual...just hotter.

Churches in Rockwood collaborated on collecting/distributing school backpacks and supplies for children in Rockwood.  They were distributed on the evening of the Rockwood Nite Out BBQ in celebration of the National Neighbor Nite Out, the first week of August.
Sorry, we know it's cheating but we could not resist sneaking in a picture of our granddaughter Phoebe!  We are looking forward to holding her in our arms when she comes with her parents on September 29th for 3 weeks!!!!!
Our usual Rockwood Community Development Corporation staff, plus 3 summer interns from Ethiopia, Somalia, and Egypt.  See http://www.rockwoodcdc.org/front/about-volunteers-and-staff/  for more staff info.
Another neighborhood event in our community was the result of 4 churches working together (including ours), along with the Rosewood Initiative (http://rosewoodinitiative.org/2015/08/10/national-night-out/), to unconditionally serve and love our neighbors.  About 700 attended.
There was a singing contest, raffle, kids activities, free hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and snow cones, and medical clinic by Compassion Connect (www.compassionconnect.com), market vendors, bands, and church info tables.
PRAYER REQUESTS:

*  Thanks for praying for Scott's 10-year-old "mentee".  It has gone MUCH better, though it does not appear that "root issues" have been dealt with.  Thanks for your continued prayers for "H".

*  We are planning to host a BLOCK PARTY on our street on Sunday evening, September 20th.  PLEASE PRAY that bridges will be built, relationships established, and that the Light and Love and Life of Jesus will shine through.

*  The next meeting of Christian leaders in Rockwood will be Tuesday, September 29th.  There has been a decline in attendance from the first meeting to the last one. Please pray that more will not only attend but also seriously commit to real collaborative efforts at community transformation.

* Scott will be teaching some classes for our church on "Identity in Christ" and "Handling Finances God's Way".  Please pray for him, the students, and for these truths to go out into the Rockwood community, and beyond.

* SUPER URGENT PRAYER REQUEST:  for Kyle's student visa and financial provision to return to Bible College in Greece (long story, but school starts Sept. 21st and we are praying for a miracle)
