This week at the State House and at Home:
NEW JOBS FOR THE LOWCOUNTRY - South Carolina is rapidly becoming a high-tech hotspot! This week, Comcast announced a $21 million investment into North Charleston that could employ more than 800 people.
THE PLACE FOR FUN IN MONCKS CORNER - On Saturday we held a ribbon cutting for the new Moncks Corner Regional Recreational Complex. I also got to "cut the cable" as Google provided free WiFi access there, and I threw out the first pitch for opening day baseball! After years of planning and hard work, it's great to see the new Rec Complex open. If the first day's attendance is any indication, the Complex is sure to be a big hit with the residents!
HELP FOR RETIRED MILITARY - The Senate is considering a bill that exempts some military retirement pay from state income taxes. I have introduced several similar bills and am supportive of this one. It's the least we can do for those who have done so much for us.
SAYING NO TO GITMO - New legislation requiring refugees settling in South Carolina be registered with the state has passed the Senate. I introduced an amendment to this bill that would block any attempt by the Obama Administration to move Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the Navel Brig in Hanahan. Democrats in the Senate shot down the Gitmo amendment on a technicality, but I will be introduce the provision as a bill next week. The refugee bill is now in the House.
TIME FOR HOUSE TO ACT TO FIX OUR ROADS - I A new state audit released this week confirms what I've been saying from day one -- we must fix the way we fix our roads. The Senate passed my roads plan that includes comprehensive DOT reform and new funding for roads WITHOUT RAISING TAXES. The House has had the roads plan on its calendar for nearly a month. I agree with the governor -- the time for the House to act is now!
YOUTH LEADERS VISIT COLUMBIA -
On Wednesday I spoke to an incredibly talented an inquisitive group of TeenPact students from across South Carolina. TeenPact is a national hands-on leadership school where Christian students learn about leadership, citizenship, and government. These young leaders made me feel greatly encouraged about the future of South Carolina!
MAJORITY LEADER ELECTION - Senator Shane Massey of Edgefield was elected to serve as Senate Majority Leader on Wednesday. I was proud to nominate him for the position. He is a principled conservative who will do a great job.
