COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
OCTOBER 3 - NOVEMBER 1, 2014

Pentimenti Gallery is pleased to announce our group exhibition, Complementary Colors.

Complementary Colors make a strange pair. They are opposite, yet they require each other. They incite each other to maximum vividness when together; and annihilate each other when mixed.  Complementary Colors  will display the works of four artists exploring their own individual interpretation of complementary colors and what the phrase means to them.

PETER COMBE
Works on Paper

bo, 42 x 42 in., mixed media (reversed punched paint chips), 2014

Peter Combe creates large 3-dimensional portraits and imagery from appropriated household paint swatches.  Each work possesses its own dynamic nature, a certain magic, that is discovered by viewing the works from different positions and witnessing their subtle shifts between abstract and representational, image and material.  For Complementary Colors, Combe will have three works on view, each is 42 x 42 inches.

Combe has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe with notable shows at Luhring Augustine Gallery, Sikkema Jenkins & Co Gallery, Cheim & Read Gallery in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His work is included in numerious personal collections.

ALEXIS GRANWELL
Works on Paper

Wrought and Stitched, 48 x 62 in., drypoint and monotype on kozo paper, 2013

Alexis Granwell creates large-scale prints evoking rocks and other structures. Having a printmaking style all her own, she is able to generate beautifully subtle images through an otherwise tedious printmaking process.  Our show features three works by Granwell. Each showcases her skill as a printmaker and her preference for large scale, compositionally dense, yet minimal works.

Granwell has exhibited throughout the United States with notable shows at Towson University and The International Print Center in New York.  She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the University of Pennsylvania’s Neil Welliver Award and residencies at the I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, CT, the Ragdale Artist Residency, Lake Forest, IL and Europos Parkas Artist Residency Vilnius, Lithuania.  Granwell received her MFA from University of Pennsylvania in 2007 and her BFA from Boston University in 2003.

CLINT JUKKALA
Paintings

Elevation, oil and acrylic on canvas, 14 x 12 inches, 2013

By suggesting eyes, goggles, and periscopes Clint Jukkala’s paintings stare outward onto the viewer while simultaneously inviting them to peer back into the painting. The resulting visual confusion keeps the viewer searching indefinitely, raising questions of place, perspective, and the act of looking.  Clint will be showing five oil paintings which all perfectly exhibit his use of complementary colors and oil paints’ material properties.

Jukkala has exhibited, lectured, and taught extensively throughout the United States.  He is currently the chair of the Graduate Program at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has been the recipient of several honors, including, The MacDowell Colony Residency, Vermont Studio Center Residency and Yaddo; an artist retreat.  Clint Jukkala received his MFA from Yale University in 1998, and his BFA from the University of Washington.

DONALD MARTINY
Paintings

Syriac, 47 x 53 in., polymer and dispersed pigment on aluminum, 2014

Donald Martiny is interested in allowing gesture to escape from the traditional rectangular support and realize its potential in relation to architectural space. Each piece encourages a dialogue between the viewer, the work, and the space both are contained within.  Martiny’s paintings are created using polymer and dispersed pigment on aluminum and often require the use of a very, very big brush. For Complementary Colors, Martiny is showing two large works and three small works chosen specifically for their color.

Donald Martiny has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including shows at Fort Wayne Museum of Art, IN, the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh, NC, and The Courtauld Institute of Art, London.  His work can be found in private collections in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Philadelphia, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Martiny has studied at the School of Visual Arts, NY, The Art Students League of New York, New York University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
