Hey y'all,

We're back with our second week of our new series, True Colors, and this time we're highlighting Aisha Adams of Aisha Adams Media Group and Nappy Thoughts. Like so many entrepreneurs we feature, Adams overcame unfathomable challenges in the pursuit of her passion (her business was born when she was bedridden after a car accident). But in this case, that familiar narrative is like looking into a kaleidoscope: Adams uses her platform to help businesses in the pursuit of equity, which in turn helps a spiderweb of others overcome their own challenges.

And isn't that what entrepreneurship is all about—the coalescence of capitalism and spirit? Actually, Adams says it best: "Capitalism is the art of pulling in money and reinvesting it into the things that you want."

Until next week,

Emily Glaser, Managing Editor

  • Last Call for PPP  💸  The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was extended through Aug. 8 and is available for small businesses and nonprofits impacted by COVID. Mountain BizWorks is still accepting applications through Aug. 3, as are some national lenders like Kabbage and BlueVine. (Btw, freelancers and independent contractors can apply too! You'll just need your Schedule C from your 2019 taxes and the other PPP forms.) Mountain BizWorks has all the deets on these and other resources.

  • Care for Kids 🧒🏻  Did you know that the YMCA is the state’s largest provider of licensed school-age childcare? During a typical school year, the Y provides after school care for more than 1,200 children each week in Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties. With schools set to reopen, the Y is adapting to different school systems in the weeks ahead—check out all the plans here

  • Achieving Con-CENSUS  🧮  Dogwood Health Trust is partnering with most 18 WNC counties and a growing number of nonprofit orgs to increase participation in the 2020 Census. According to their calculations, if everyone responded to the census, it could translate to some $3.6 billion for the region, but NC has traditionally been undercounted. The Trust is offering counties a $1K incentive for each percentage point increase through Oct. 31 and mini-grants to assist with Census marketing. Learn more.
