Hydro-Electricity & Running Water

Over the last few months we've been hard at work in Lailenpi, Chin State to bring hydro-electricity and a clean water supply to our Community Health Worker (CHW) training centre and Clinic.

This has taken multiple explorations into the jungle, assessments of five rivers and a great community effort in laying down over 3 miles of pipework and cabling.

We are delighted to report that water has now started to defy gravity and is flowing up and not down the Chin Hills!

Community support to lay the pipework

One of the many challenges we face was the hydro-electric generator.  It took 5 days to dismantle, 3 days to transport and 5 days to reassemble once in-situ. We've also had to cut down enough trees to make 200 pylons to carry the electricity cables.  You can see more photographs of the team hard at work in the new gallery section of our website.

We've raised £41,000 for this project out of a total budget of £52,000. If you would like to invest in this project and help us to complete it before the start of our health programme in September, do get in touch with our team on info@healthandhope.org or click below to donate now.

Student Results: Freedom to Education Project

Our Freedom to Education Project (FEP) aims to identify and support young men and women from Chin State who carry a vision for the long term benefit of their people. A village selection committee nominates students based on their Class 10 results, a written test and an interview. Those who are committed to use further training for the betterment of their people are offered the opportunity to pursue higher education.

Freedom To Education Students
Phoi San Thang seen on the left of this photograph achieved a first division pass in his Year 12 results and hopes to go on to study civil engineering.

Our year 12 students have just had their results back and we’re pleased to report that seven out of ten students passed their exams, with one student achieving a first division pass.

This was a tremendous result considering that the majority come from households whose parents are illiterate and from an education system where there is only an 8% pass rate at grade 10.

We would like to give these seven students the opportunity to study at degree level, in subjects ranging from nursing and engineering to business management. It costs £1,970 to fully fund a student through each year of their degree studies, with the average Chin family only able to contribute £330.  This makes it impossible for students from rural Chin state to ever afford an education without external support.

With a registration deadline of mid-June, we are urgently looking to raise a further £11,480 to help these seven students continue with their studies.

Are you able to invest in the future of one of these students?  Click here to read more about Phoi San Thang's story or click below to donate now to the Freedom to Education Project.

Lailenpi Village Town!
In the spring of 2016 Lailenpi was officially inaugurated as a town by the Chin State government.  Over 50 officials including the outgoing and newly appointed Chief Ministers of Chin State visited Lailenpi where our training centre is based.  We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of the government of Chin State towards our work and for the new services and opportunities that this will bring.  You can find photographs of the town people celebrating on our website in our new photo gallery.

Thank you!
We couldn’t do all of this without your ongoing support for which we are so grateful.

Do keep in touch with us through our website and Facebook over the course of the year as we continue this vital work.
