As part of our internal Crafting Democratic Futures communications, we highlight one team’s story every month.

This month, we’re sharing broadly the work of the Rutgers-Newark team.

“Newark boasts an especially lively local-history community, and we are establishing a community research fellows component that will engage institutions and individuals whose research and archival holdings are invaluable to the project,” writes Mark Krasovic, associate professor of history and American Studies, and interim director of the Clement A. Price Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience at Rutgers-Newark.

“As we work locally in New Jersey’s largest city, we do so with an eye toward statewide disparities and state-level reparations work, just as we acknowledge and join the reparative work already being performed in Newark. Mayor Ras Baraka and Ryan Haygood have described Newark as a case study of the “Two Americas”: impressive investment in a resurgent downtown on the one hand, and neighborhoods in great need of the same on the other.”

The biannual convening of Crafting Democratic Futures will take place on Tuesday, October 26 from 1-3 PM EST. Please stay tuned for a calendar invite.

The Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies & the Economy at Carnegie Mellon University is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a series of talks, two of which are dedicated to honoring Dr. Earl Lewis. “Celebrating the Scholarship and Professional Career of Earl Lewis” convenes an extensive list of scholars who will join Dr. Trotter (CMU’s Crafting Democratic Futures principal investigator) and Dr. Lewis to discuss “African American Urban History from Past to Future Tense: Thoughts on the State of a Field”. RSVP here.

Lastly, this is the final call for input on the External Facilitator/Trainer position designed to support all teams. The link to the draft description is in each team’s agenda. If you have additional input to share, simply email your feedback by Wednesday 9/22 to jecruz@umich.edu.

Talk with you all again soon!
