HOW YOUR GIFT WILL HELP THIS CHRISTMAS AND THE YEAR AHEAD
“What you give to us is not just a place to eat; not just a class to take part in. By accepting us and helping us, you give us hope; you give us dignity; you give us a family; and you allow us to feel human again.”
- Asif, Somali Refugee
For as little as HK1600 can feed around 100 refugees a nutritious, wholesome warm meal a day. With heartfelt thanks for your support, we serve close to 20,000 meals a year, offering three fresh meals a day during the week and a healthy lunch on Saturdays. Ideally we would love your help in securing our remaining target of around 20 regular donors for HK1600 per month or HK300,000 to keep our kitchen in operation for 2018. Your continued support enables us to keep our soup kitchen doors open and help more refugees like Asif.
As the year draws to a close, we at the Centre would like to thank everyone for a very meaningful and exciting year! We successfully launched some of our key programmes which aim at providing valuable support to parents and children and look for temporary durable solutions for recognized refugees! We also had our biggest and most powerful event since 2012 --an exhibition called "Under Our Shelter' where we raised almost HK$330,000 and reached out to over 1,000 members in the community! Thank you to our our sponsors, partners and volunteers for enabling this event to be such a success. We couldn't have done it without you!
With a heavy heart we bid goodbye to our former manager, Mr.Justin Murgai who left Hong Kong in May, however he still remains very active in supporting us and will work remotely from Canada.
We would also like to welcome Ms. Mhairi Jerga who joined our team in August as our Fundraising and Development Coordinator.
Thank you for all your support in 2017, because of YOU we managed to serve around 1,500 clients across all of our programmes. Here's hoping for a great 2018 for the refugee community in Hong Kong.
May you give and receive much love this holiday season and may our brothers and sisters around the world experience peace.
Centre for Refugees is today the only community centre for refugees in Hong Kong where we provide the most vulnerable—including victims of torture, war, genocide and other acts of persecution from Africa, the Middle-East, and parts of South Asia facing conflict—with a comprehensive support system that increases their social financial, cultural, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Our focus in on filling a vital gap in humanitarian welfare by providing emergency shelter, food, education, counselling, and community support, while our long-term vision is to see refugees become empowered, engaged, valued, and respected as members of society.
