35th Annual Summit Next Week

 
   
   

Scheduled for next week, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce's 35th Annual Summit is where you can connect with business leaders, hear from a premier line-up of speakers on the state's most pressing issues and help pave the way to the future of South Carolina. Please note: currently, the Wild Dunes Resort Village and Inn are both sold out.

This year's Summit, presented by Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., will feature special presentations honoring the Business Leader of the Year (Mike Brenan, President, BB&T South Carolina), Public Servant of the Year (Jim Newsome, President & CEO, SC Ports Authority) and Sgt. William Jasper Freedom Award (posthumously awarded to Ike McLeese, former President & CEO, Columbia Chamber). In addition, confirmed speakers include:

Business Speaks at the State House: Sponsorship Information Available

Register early for the SC Chamber of Commerce’s legislative preview and reserve your spot! The Chamber will host Business Speaks at the State House on January 20, 2015 at 4 p.m. Business Speaks, a town hall gathering of more than 400 of South Carolina's leading business people, constitutional officers and members of the General Assembly, provides a special opportunity to hear updates on the South Carolina Chamber's 2015 Competitiveness Agenda and speak directly with House and Senate leaders.
 
Key Senate and House members will participate in an open panel discussion on important business issues such as infrastructure needs, health care costs, energy concerns, economic development and workforce development. During the town hall meeting, the Chamber will honor legislators who scored 100 percent on the Chamber's 2014 Legislative Scorecard and are strong advocates of business. These leaders will be presented with the Business Advocate Award.

UPS Seeks to hire 95,000 seasonal employees for holiday surge

In anticipation of the e-commerce-driven holiday delivery surge, UPS announced last week that it expects to hire between 90,000 - 95,000 seasonal employees to support the anticipated holiday surge in package deliveries continuing through January 2015. The seasonal positions as package sorters, loaders, delivery helpers and drivers have long been an entry point for permanent employment, training and career opportunity after the company re-assesses its needs following the holiday period. In South Carolina specifically, UPS is hiring 50 drivers, 1,500 driver helpers and 400 inside package handlers.
