AntiquityNOW Celebrates
First Anniversary

President and co-founder Shirley K. Gazsi reflects on an inspiring year

It was the end of August in 2012 and a group of us were having lunch at the Burrito Loco in New York’s West Village.  We were all devotees of the arts, particularly anything to do with antiquity.  At some point we were lamenting that antiquity’s legacy in contemporary life was often overlooked.  Suddenly, an idea came up:  why don’t we form our own organization?  Something that brings antiquity alive?  We snickered, we made jokes, we chortled.  And then we couldn’t think of a reason not to take plunge.  Maybe it was the quesadillas, guacamole and enchiladas redolent with the flavors of an ancient Mesoamerican cuisine.  Maybe it was the cockeyed optimism of cultural enthusiasts intrigued by “aha” moments from history.  Whatever the reason, whatever the spark of inspiration, AntiquityNOW was born.   And here we are, a year later,  followed by leading archaeologists, recognized by the National Council of the Social Studies (we’ve been selected to present our educational curricula to the National Conference in November), and growing our presence month by month. We are surprised and gratified at how quickly our concept has been embraced, and look forward to another successful year. We have big plans ahead!

We hope you will join us on our great adventure. Pass the salsa and stay tuned!
We all scream for ice cream... and graffiti!
Our most popular blog this month was an update on ancient graffiti.  A find at Smyrna promises a wealth of information about life in Izmir during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.  With quotes like "I love someone who does not love me," graffiti once again shows how similar we are to those living in antiquity.  Make sure to read the whole post!

Ice Cream SundaeThe history of ice cream was another popular blog this month, which is no surprise considering the summer heat!  Make sure to check out the several thousand-year history of this scrumptious dessert, plus a recipe for delicious homemade ice cream!

Find us on Alltop!

AntiquityNOW insights are now included in the Archaeology resources at What is Alltop? According to their website, “The purpose of Alltop is to help you answer the question, ‘What’s happening?’ in ‘all the topics’ that interest you.”  They gather headlines of the latest and most relevant stories from what they believe to be the best sites and blogs that cover a particular topic. The Science Channel explains that “rather than forcing the user to sort through a massive collection of keyword-based results like a normal search engine, Alltop recommends a number of links, which are vetted for quality and relevance on any given topic.”

We encourage you to create your own account on this ever-growing site for customized updates on the latest archaeology news!
