Networking is invaluable for career advancement, to generate job leads, build long-term relationships and to learn about new and emerging opportunities. Here are some tips for maximizing your next in-person networking experience:
 

  1. Look good and feel good.  If you're going to an important event and are looking for a job, dress as if you were going on an interview, just make sure your attire is appropriate for the environment and culture.  You only have one chance to make a first impression (our good friend Sara Canaday has a wonderful book out on personal branding).
     
  2. If you're currently unemployed, have some temporary business cards made up that you can hand out (Vista Print or Office Max can print up inexpensive cards). Don't forget to ask for business cards from people you meet, as well.
     
  3. Have a 20-second "elevator speech" prepared on who you are, what you do and what your current job or career focus is.  Use your own language and be confident! Most importantly, be authentic and be yourself.
     
  4. Go early and stay late (often some of the best, most relaxed times for meeting others is immediately before or after a lunch or dinner presentation or event).
     
  5. Show genuine interest in those you are meeting.  Focus not just on how others can help you, but on how you can help them (we recommend this as a general way to approach life; what comes around, goes around).
     
  6. If you make connections you want to cultivate, follow-up!  Send an email or initiate a lunch meeting, if appropriate.  If you're meeting a lot of people, if often helps to make a notation on the back of the cards you collect to jog your memory (ex: we discussed Steve Cove, wants information on Wisdom@Work group).
     
  7. Set an intention for what you want to experience prior to walking into a networking event (i.e., expand your network, generate leads, cultivate new friendships, get resources/referrals, learning/professional growth, etc.). This will help you use your time more effectively and stay focused.
     
  8. Check your attitude before you interact with others. What is your mindset (positive, negative, neutral) and what are your expectations for this experience? "If you think you can or you think you can't, you are right." – Henry Ford
 
Lastly, a whole world of networking is also available online (Linked In is one of the top job search tools out there if used effectively). We highly recommend you pick up a copy of our good friend Patti DeNucci’s stellar new book The Intentional Networker to get some specific do’s and don’t’s around networking online, in person and in a variety of other circumstances.
