Education Secretary Nicky Morgan today laid out plans for an overhaul of the sector which will see significant changes to structure, training, support and development over the course of this Parliament.

Here’s a precis of the 128-page White Paper, Educational Excellence Everywhere, published today. A number of the headings, and significant chunks of content, look remarkably like the key drivers set out by SCHOOLS NorthEast and partners for the last six years to create a regional schools strategy to drive up education standards in the North East (with the exception of the Government’s plans such as mandatory academisation for all).

£20m/year strategy to improve North schools
Schools Northeast
The Government is to invest £20m/year in improving education standards across the North of England as part of its Northern Powerhouse initiative, it was announced yesterday. SCHOOLS NorthEast has contacted Sir Nick to request a meeting to ensure that North East schools have a strong voice in the report.

Sugar levy tax to be reinvested in school sports

The Government has introduced a new soft drinks industry levy to fund primary school sports, as well as opportunities for secondary pupils at the end of the school day. The sugar tax will be ring-fenced to fund a doubling of the current primary schools sports premium to £320m per year from September 2017.

Schools Northeast   Paul Ashton, Head Teacher at Shiney Row Primary School in Sunderland, writes about the fundamental right to education in this week's Talking Heads. He mentions being inspired by the Salamanca Statement, which he considers a bold and dynamic statement regarding special educational needs and inclusion. Mr Ashton says: "It resonated with me to such an extent it became somewhat of a guiding set of principles for me. I still have it up on my wall in my office today." Read more >

Schools Northeast   Teaching was the first-choice profession for almost a fifth of young people questioned in a survey about their dream career. 

More than 2,000 secondary pupils responded to the survey, and teaching was the first choice of profession for 18.8% of them. The second more desirable profession was that of an athlete, with 15.6% of pupils saying they want to become footballers, tennis players, or even "Olympians."
