New literacy campaign launched in the
North East

 
The Read North East campaign will focus on early years literacy, encouraging parents to read with their children from birth to give them the best start in life. A series of events and activities will raise awareness of the importance of literacy skills and inspire local children and families to pick up a book.

Mental health service for schools in Newcastle discontinued 
Newcastle City Council will discontinue the Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TaMHS) programme starting next month, due to lack of funding. 67 schools who participated in the programme will cease to receive the hour a week of funded counselling and will no longer have access to a subsidised rate for any additional time purchased.

Education Secretary Justine Greening proposes scrapping KS1 SATs
In a new consultation, announced this morning, Greening is seeking views on the scrapping of tests at the end of key stage 1 in favour of a newly designed baseline test in the reception years. a source close to the government said an online test would be preferred and could be designed in collaboration with preferred providers of the previous baseline tests.

Spring Term Ofsted Briefings
Our spring term briefings will include a themed discussion around careers education. We are delighted to be joined by Adrian Lyons HMI, Ofsted’s National Lead for economics, business and enterprise. Adrian led on the ‘Getting Ready for Work’ report. We will hold two events in two different locations in the region, to maximise the opportunity for school leaders to attend.

This conference will inform the work of Healthy MindED, the country's only schools-led Mental Health Commission launched by SCHOOLS NorthEast to tackle the decline in child mental well-being.
