Schools Northeast
Dear subscriber,

I extend a warm welcome back to you all. I hope you took the opportunity to recharge your batteries for the new school year.

Despite schools being closed for the summer, the recess period was alive with data and analysis on school performance, political announcements, policy changes and thought leadership.

You’ll notice that your Weekly Update has a fresh, new look to it. Your feedback at the end of summer was that you still wanted an overview of ‘the world of education’ with a strong North East feel. You also wanted a tighter, brighter read with the opportunity to do further research in the areas that matter most to you.

There was demand from people wanting to hear thought leadership and commentary from within the region so we have introduced a Talking Heads blog. SCHOOLS NorthEast trustee Bernard Trafford has written an insightful piece which will resonate with many of you – particularly regarding examinations!

This term, we have our flagship SCHOOLS NorthEast Summit – the best attended regional education conference in the UK. With Sir Michael Wilshaw as the keynote speaker and a strong line-up of speakers and breakout sessions, take up of places has been incredibly strong. With over 60% of places already booked, time is fast running out to secure your ticket.

I want to end this message by reiterating that SCHOOLS NorthEast exists to serve you, the schools. We are there to support you and to ensure that there is a thriving network for school leaders to engage with. These are turbulent times and the power of the collective is invaluable. If there are areas in which we can better support you, we want to hear from you.

Yours,

Mike Parker

Schools Northeast   Dr Bernard Trafford, Head of Newcastle's Royal Grammar School, writes the first in a series of blog articles from school leaders in our region.

Much like this first issue of our Weekly Update, his article, "Remembering what education's for?" gives an overview of all the prominent education news this Summer, exam results, careers education and much, much more.

Schools Northeast   Crossing the line: improving success rates among students retaking English and maths GCSEs by Policy Exchange calls for secondary schools to cover the costs of some or all their students who fail to get a C in English or maths.
Education think-tank LKMco quickly published their opinion on this in an article titled Kick a dog when it's down: Fining schools for struggling. IPPR's Jonathan Clifton also shared his thoughts in Should schools be fined if students don't get their GCSEs?

Schools Northeast   A new YouGov poll commissioned by the TES reveals a surge in parental aggression towards schools staff.

According to the survey results, 73% of teachers believe parents' behaviour towards them has worsened over the last several years, and only 2% said it had improved in this time. Many teachers believed the frequent use of social media was one of the factors that exacerbated the problem.
