Greetings from fantasy author Tracy Falbe!

Thank you for subscribing to my email newsletter.

I live in the Great Lakes, and my region got hit by the big polar vortex of 2019.

On January 31st,  Battle Creek, Michigan recorded a low temperature of -18 degrees Fahrenheit. This broke the previous record low temperature set in 1899!

Intense winds accompanied these arctic temperatures and drove the wind chill temperatures down to -40 in the area. The kids didn't have school for the whole week. The library even closed for 2 days, which is a true hardship to me!

Then a major accident struck an important natural gas processing station in my state and threatened the fuel supply for millions during record-breaking demand for heat. The state sent an alert to everyone's cell phones at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday January 30th and asked everyone in very urgent terms to reduce their thermostats to 65 degrees. This was a most unwelcome request when it was -17 at that moment at my house and frost was coming through the nails around the door trim.

But I turned down the heat immediately because the alert seemed sincerely dire. The prospect of losing natural gas heat in that weather was quite sobering as well. Happily, disaster was diverted as the state cut its natural gas use by 10 percent overnight on the coldest day in generations! For the first time in my life, I was proud of my state!
