Favourable climatic zones to boost onion seed production in northern Pakistan

The long, cool days and dry summer in the Chitral District of Pakistan offers ideal climatic conditions for vegetable seed production prompting farmers to produce onion seeds – potentially earning them double compared to conventional crops. MDF’s partner, Magnus Kahl Seeds is currently the only seed company working in remote Chitral to produce high quality onion seeds for local and export markets.

Escape the beach and go trekking in Fiji

MDF partner Talanoa Treks tours voted #1 of things to do in Suva on Trip Advisor. Tourism in Fiji usually conjures images of white sand beaches, snorkeling and diving, but trekking through Fiji’s wild and tropical interior is gaining recognition as a ‘must do’ activity when holidaying in the group of Pacific Islands. Talanoa Treks is the only dedicated hiking tour company in Fiji – offering guided single or multi-day walks through Viti Levu’s rural areas and working in partnership with local communities. MDF Pakistan together with Austrade Pakistan (Australian Trade Commission) took part in a major agricultural business expo in Lahore in March, building important linkages with the diary-meat and horticulture sectors – key sectors MDF supports. Read more here.

Where does your daily coffee fix come from?

High-end coffee in Timor-Leste has greater potential for export – if it can be graded properly. A master coffee taster and quality assurance specialist was in Dili in June to train local staff from boutique coffee exporter Café Brisa Serena in assessing the quality of the coffee it sources from the mountainous region of Letefoho. In a small back room of their office, people gathered about dozens of cups of coffee noisily slurping hundreds of samples from spoons. Read the full story here.

Australia's President of the Senate visits Herbex noni fruit processing facility in Fiji

Senator Stephen Parry was welcomed by owners of Herbex, Gerhard Stemmler and Renuka Devi who explained about the processing of noni fruits during a tour of the factory in April. Raw materials are locally sourced from women and men on the outskirts of Lautoka city, but it is difficult to source good quality noni fruit on a consistent basis. Through a partnership with MDF, Herbex is extending its reach by providing transport services to around 30 fruit pickers in the remote rural areas of the Ba and Ra provinces on the northern side of Viti Levu where there is an abundance of noni fruit trees.
