Chairs Diary August 2019

Hi <<First Name>>

One of Kāpiti’s greatest supporters, Hon Nathan Guy, has announced his retirement from politics at next year’s election.
Nathan Guy has worked closely with the Kāpiti Coast Chamber of Commerce since winning the Otaki seat in 2008 - providing essential support on significant projects, including Transmission Gully, the Expressway, and helping bring Air Chathams to Kāpiti.
We will miss his enthusiasm and passion for our community as the MP for Otaki but know he will always be an advocate for the region.
Nathan, thank you for all you’ve done for local businesses and the Kāpiti Coast.
Do You Have a Vision for Kāpiti’s Future?

Nominations are open for the 2019 Local Body Elections, and if you think you can make a difference to the future of Kāpiti, we want to encourage you to stand for election - for either a Community Board, the Council or run for Mayor
The next three years are a critical time for Kāpiti and we need a Council with a bold, long-term vision for our community to help us make the most of major developments - including Transmission Gully and the next stage of the Expressway - to ensure we plan well ahead and anticipate predicted growth.
Ultimately, we want to grow a local economy which delivers higher-paying jobs, attracts more people to live and work in Kāpiti, brings new businesses to the region and helps existing ones grow.
Businesspeople have many of the necessary skills to positively impact local governance; decision-making, strategy, planning, risk assessment, and they benefit from having the knowledge of what it takes to run a successful business.
If this sounds like you, more information about standing in the 2019 Local Body Elections is available on the KCDC website . Nominations close at midday on 16 August.
A Collective Voice for Kāpiti Business

The Kāpiti Chamber is one of the strongest regional Chambers in New Zealand, with more than 310 members (and growing), we’re currently renewing memberships for the 2019/2020 year.
Kāpiti is moving from being a medium-growth region to a high-growth region, and the greater our membership is, the stronger voice we have to represent you and our business community.
From helping bring Air Chathams to Kāpiti, to lobbying the Kāpiti Coast District Council around its Open for Business policy, we work on business’ behalf to ensure it has a voice at the table and is heard by decision-makers.
If you’ve been thinking about joining the Chamber, now is the time to do it - especially with Local Body Elections in October.  You can join at

Building apprenticeships for two Kāpiti youth!

Pzazz Building are looking to offer two building apprenticeships to Work Ready Kāpiti programme participants.

Nick Fleming, 17yr old Ōtaki College student has recently been offered a fantastic work opportunity following his work experience placement via Work Ready Kāpiti’s WEX programme. Nick completed a weeks work experience at Pzazz Building and received great feedback from Owner Rudy van Vlerken and his team.

Rudy commented “Nick worked hard. He knew his way around a building site, he was alert, listened and did whatever was asked of him. He won praise from all the staff for his attitude and willingness to work.”  Nick made quite an impact during his short time with them, as Rudy goes on to explain, “two of my Foreman have already asked if he will be back, so we have asked him to return for the next school holidays. We will start with paid work in the holidays with a possible apprenticeship at the end of the school year if all goes well.”

Nick commented, “The work experience went really well and was helpful for me because it gave me an idea of what building is and I got lots of positives from it.”

With a passion for the work that Work Ready Kāpiti are doing for youth, Pzazz are also key sponsors of the initiative and attend their #EmployerMeet events (speed dating style events for employers and local youth). It was there that they also met another local student - Cody Peart from Kāpiti College. They were so impressed with Cody during their interview that as Rudy commented, “we also offered Cody a chance at an apprenticeship if he keeps in touch and takes up our offer of work one day a week .”

These are two great examples of how the #EmployerMeet events and the WEX - work experience placements are making a real difference in the lives of Kāpiti youth.

If you would like to know more about Work Ready Kāpiti’s WEX - work experience programme or their #EmployerMeet events, check out their website -

Work Ready Kāpiti will be hosting their next #EmployerMeet at Paraparaumu College on Wednesday 14/08/2019

This is a speed dating style event that aims at connecting local employers and youth in a fun and relaxed environment. If you are a local business owner who would be interested in attending, particularly if you work within either: retail, landscaping, or the beauty industry please contact Work Ready Kāpiti:
