Latvia takes over the European Council Presidency

Brussels, 1 January 2015: Latvia took over the rotating EU Council Presidency from Italy.  The Baltic state will lead and co-ordinate member states’ work until the end of June.

The Presidency’s priorities are a “competitive Europe, a digital Europe and an engaged Europe”. In the context of increasing economic growth and jobs, the Presidency has argued that the EU “must seize digital opportunities, promote sustainable energy and environmental policies and strengthen the Single Market and industrial sector”. Specifically, the Presidency wants agreement on the Data Protection package and the Telecoms Single Market. A Digital Assembly will be hosted in Riga in June 2015 to discuss emerging challenges for the sector.
The calendar and provisional agenda of Council meetings has been released.

Brussels, 26 January 2015: The European Commission and Parliament launched a new Transparency Register with the aim of making EU decision-making and the activities of lobbyists more accountable while giving lobbyists more incentives to register and making the database easier for lobbyists and the public to access.
The transparency register has been set up to answer core questions such as what interests are being pursued, by whom and with what budgets. The system is operated jointly by the European Parliament and the European Commission.
The new system brings changes to the way human resources invested in lobbying are declared, requires additional information about involvement in EU committees, forums, intergroups or similar structures, and legislative files currently followed. The register also extends the requirement to declare estimated costs related to lobbying to all registrants.

London, 15 January 2015: Marketing budgets have increased for the ninth successive quarter but at a slower rate, reveals the Q4 2014 IPA Bellwether Report published today (15th January 2015). Despite this loss of growth momentum, which stems from heightened caution regarding the slowdown in the wider economy, the average growth rate for marketing budgets in 2014 was the highest recorded in the survey’s 15-year history.

London, 12 January 2015: The IPA has highlighted the advertising industry’s contribution to the hugely successful creative industries as outlined in the release of new government data.

The DCMS data reveals that in 2013 the advertising and marketing sector made up 18% of the total jobs in the UK’s creative economy at 482,000. This forms the second biggest sector - after IT, software and computer services - and was up 3.2% from 2011. The data also shows that in 2013 the advertising and marketing sector was responsible for contributing an enormous £10.2bn to the UK economy and that exports of services from the sector increased in 2011 to £2.0bn and again in 2012 to £2.3bn.

London, 28 January 2015: New research by Deloitte, commissioned by the Advertising Association, has revealed that without advertising, much of the UK’s media, culture and sport would be unsustainable in its current form.
The report – Advertising Pays 3 – examines how advertising spend and brand sponsorship impacts the media, entertainment, arts and sport that people enjoy every day.
Analysis of primary market research data conducted as part of this project, suggests that people value access to these advertising-funded services at nearly £10 billion.   By lowering the cost of media and culture, advertising brings it within reach of millions more people than would otherwise be the case.
