EU data protection reform steps up

The EU data protection reform was announced back in 2012 when the European Commission presented the General Data Protection Regulation draft. Following the Commission’s proposal, the European Parliament adopted its position on the Regulation in autumn 2013. The Council of Ministers of the EU took over and spent months negotiating several issues that have been considered controversial, including the One Stop Shop mechanism (OSS) and consent of data subject.

Online Behavioural Advertising Self-Regulatory Programme gains traction across Europe in 2014
2014 saw strong delivery of the pan-European Self-Regulatory Programme aimed at providing citizens with greater transparency and control over Online Behavioural Advertising (OBA), according to the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance’s (EDAA) 2014 Activity Report published last week. The Commission seeks to improve comparison websites and apps

A European Commission study suggests that 65% of consumers experience difficulties when using online comparison tools. The Commission is therefore developing principles to ensure they provide transparent and up to date information. The principles will contribute to the enforcement of other EU legislation such as the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and the Consumer Rights Directive. Learn more.

EU copyright debate fires up
The European Parliament’s report on copyright, drafted by German MEP Julia Reda, stirred a vivid debate across Europe with its focal point in Brussels. Reda’s report calls for copyright reform and it stresses that the European Copyright Title would harmonise 28 existing copyright regimes.

Denmark set to tighten its legislation on e-cigarettes
Following the research from 2013 which showcased more than 150,000 people in Denmark smoked e-cigarettes at least once every three days and the adoption of EU Tobacco Products Directive in 2014, Denmark has decided to tighten its e-cigarettes legislation. Learn more.

Digital Single Market strategy slowly shapes up
The European Commission held an orientation debate on 25 March 2015 about the Digital Single Market (DSM) Strategy. The Commission in charge of the DSM, Mr. Vice-President Andrus Ansip, presented his ideas to other Commissioners who then gave input on how digital might affect their portfolios. Read more.

Chinese Government expected to amend advertising law

Beijing is taking a firmer stand on advertising in its new legislation which is expected to enter into force this summer. The proposal will change the current advertising rules including those aimed at children. Learn more.

EACA Care Awards Winners to be announced in June
The winners of the 2014 & 2015 EACA Care Awards will be announced in June in Brussels. The winning agencies will receive their awards from Jury Chair Dita Charanzova, Member of the European Parliament (ALDE). These Awards for European Social Marketing Campaigns recognise excellence in promoting care for people, resources and the environment.

European Advertising Certificate: fourth edition of the examination

EACA just held the fourth edition of its European Advertising Certificate (EAC) exam! Having followed the online course since November 2014, participants were able to apply their knowledge on 26 March 2015, during the written examination that took place simultaneously in 22 different countries. We would like to thank all agencies who put their young talent on the learning and congratulate students for their hard work.Results will be announced in June 2015 and those successful candidates will be awarded with an EAC Certificate, which will bring them recognition within the industry.

Ad Venture: the first round of judging has started

The countdown begins towards the announcement of the top 10 Ad Venture 2015 campaigns! Jurors have already started to rate the campaigns submitted last week by participating students. This year’s challenge, organised in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), aims to raise awareness about the benefits which space exploration brings to the daily lives of European citizens.  The first round, taking place online at this very moment, will lead to the selection of the 10 best campaigns, which will go on to the second round. This exciting news will be announced on 17th April 2015. The edcom team would like to thank all academics, agency and client representatives who are making this competition possible.
