A Friendly Note From Our Team

Dear client ,

As most European and American countries are experiencing changing weather patterns and dropping temperatures approaching the holiday season, Curaçao is oddly busy decorating Christmas trees still in its envied 30 degree Celsius tropical environment.

Several specialty shops open only in November & December to sell Christmas trees (both real and imitation), decorations and the traditional fireworks.  This Holiday Season, the popular neighborhood of
Pietermaai hosted the first Curaçao Christmas market offering holiday specialties such as Glühwein, oliebollen (a lovely Dutch treat) and a “Popcorn Choir”.

Aqualectra, the island's water supply and power company, is a proud sponsor of the Holiday Decorative Lights in the city centre of Willemstad.  It is a wondrous sight!

We are looking forward to the festivities and would like to wish you all a warm Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Arrival of Sinterklaas

On Saturday November 14, “Sinterklaas” (Saint Nicholas) arrived on Curacao by boat.

The Sinterklaas feast is a Dutch tradition based on Saint Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, who shared his belongings with the poor. “Sinterklaas”, dressed in bright red and white and with a long white beard, is thought to be the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus.

Sinterklaas is also a true children’s friend and gives presents to every child on the evening of 5 December, the day before his own birthday. The Brionplein in Otrabanda was crowded with little children and their family Saturday, November 14th, to welcome the boat and its passengers.

While in The Netherlands people argue about the skin color of Sinterklaas’ helpers (Zwarte Piet), Curacao started a new tradition several years ago. The “Zwarte Pieten” in Curacao have all kinds of colors because they always run into a rainbow while on their way to the island. Therefore they are colored black, white, red, green and yellow and all other colors of the rainbow.

Government Expects Economic Growth in 2015
