Asia hospitals urge govts to act on climate change

GGHH Asia Conference participants call for the promotion of public health amidst climate crisis

More than a month before Paris’ COP21, over a hundred representatives from various Asia hospitals and health systems gathered in Seoul, Korea and came up with a declaration urging local, national, and regional governments to intensify their commitments in tackling climate change to protect and promote public health.

The  2015 Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Asia Conference, co-organized by the Yonsei University Health System and the Korea Green Hospitals Society, served as a venue for health care leaders in Asia discuss how the health sector in the region can work together to do no further harm to both the planet and people’s health by mitigating and adapting to climate change. Philippine health sector leaders endorse Paris Platform for Healthy Energy

Few days after the 2nd anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan and 20 days before the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris this December, health sector leaders from the Philippines called for stronger commitments for climate mitigation by phasing out coal and other fossil fuels and shifting to renewable energy to protect both human health and the global climate.


Health Care Without Harm (HCWH)-Asia, together with different health sector organizations and leaders in the Philippines, launched the Paris Platform for Healthy Energy during a forum entitled “The Necessary Alternatives: Balancing Energy, Health and the Climate Challenge” held at the Senate of the Philippines. HCWH-Asia's healthy energy film to be screened at Cost of Coal Film Festival in Paris



Health Care Without Harm-Asia Healthy Energy Initiative is proud to present its documentary video “The Big Show,” a short film that examines the link between health, energy and climate.


Featuring healthy energy advocates in the country, the 7-minute video chronicles the health impacts of coal-fired power plants in communities in the Philippines and the need to transition to renewable energy sources to counter the effects of climate change.


The Big Show will be screened at the Cost of Coal Film Festival on December 7 during the COP21 in Paris, along with other films from South Africa, Russia, Australia, and China. Read more
 

HCWH-Asia welcomes its first regional Advisory Council

 


To better strengthen and synergize the work of Health Care Without Harm in the region, HCWH-Asia recently formed its first Advisory Council during the GGHH Asia Regional Conference in Seoul. The first regional council to be formed within HCWH, the Council shall provide input and guidance on the direction of the regional office’s work. Read more

 

GGHH Asia Webinar highlights members' Sustainable Health Care Waste Management practices


Last October 14, GGHH Asia hosted its first ever webinar showcasing the best sustainable health care waste management practices of its members in the region. Webinar presenters included representiatives from Maria Reyna Xavier University Hospital in the Philippines and Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital.

March for Climate Justice in the Philippines

Last November 28, thousands of Filipinos in different parts of the country joined the Global Climate March movement to call on government leaders to take solid actions to tackle climate change ahead of the climate talks in Paris.

Organized in solidarity with the worldwide climate movement, the march was participated in by representives from the youth sector, civil society, religious organizations, and coal-affected communities (Photo by AC Dimatatac/350.org).


Healthy Energy Caravan

To make more environmentally responsible leaders out of future health care professionals, HCWH-Asia's Healthy Energy Campaign has been bringing the Healthy Energy Caravan in different medical schools in the Philippines educating medical students about the links between health. energy, and climate.
 

The Caravan recently visited St. Paul University in Manila, where campaigner Dr. Renzo Guinto talked about the role of the health sector in the climate talks in Paris. 


PHA 2015 Annual Convention
At the annual convention of the Philippine Hospital Association last November 7, HCWH Global Projects Director Josh Karliner spoke about the 2020 Health Care Climate Challenge and the urgent need for hospitals to adapt and mitigate to climate change.
