This month, one of our new GGHH members, NHS Scotland, announced a ban on potent greenhouse gases in anaesthesia - a growing development we hope to see scaled up across Europe at a system level.

Registration is now open for our European Parliament event to discuss the impact of animal welfare on AMR. We also have released a report from last year’s European Healthcare Climate Summit.

We have announced our keynote speakers for CleanMed Europe: join us online 5- 9 June and registration is now open for our special one-day in-person event: CleanMed Berlin.

Climate Programme Manager: Design and implement practical carbon management strategies, initiatives, and policies on climate change and healthcare. Candidates should be familiar with the operations of EU institutions and the formation of EU policy. 

Circular Healthcare Programme Manager: Lead our advocacy work in Europe on circular economy, sustainable procurement, and safer use of chemicals in healthcare. Develop and deliver projects with members and global partners to drive innovation in healthcare procurement, sustainable waste management, and resource efficiency. 

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until 14/04/2023.

Event report | European Healthcare Climate Summit 2022

The fourth edition of the European Healthcare Climate Summit was supported by the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland. Meeting online in October 2022, we brought together a wide variety of healthcare stakeholders to discuss what climate-smart Healthcare looks like in practice. The summit featured tangible case studies from across Europe, supporting healthcare facilities to replicate in their operations. A full event report is now available, featuring key examples presented during the summit.

UK healthcare leads the phase-out of desflurane - a potent greenhouse gas

NHS Scotland and NHS England are the first health systems in the world to announce a phase-out of desflurane - an anaesthetic gas with a global warming potential 2,500 times greater than carbon dioxide. NHS Scotland announced an immediate ban on desflurane use, while NHS England has committed to phasing it out by 2024.

Event | Food production and AMR: Improving animal welfare to save human lives

Hosted by Member of the European Parliament Sirpa Pietikäinen (EPP), HCWH Europe is holding a hybrid event at the European Parliament to discuss the impact of increasing animal welfare standards to reduce the need for antibiotics in food production and how this supports human health. Health Care Without Harm Europe at ECR 2023

The HCWH Europe team recently attended the European Conference on Radiology (ECR) 2023 to support Philips and the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in the ‘Sustainability Zone’ exhibition. The team spoke to many radiologists to increase awareness of the healthcare sector’s climate footprint and to spark action that decarbonises radiology practice.
