No additional measures required for Namibia

All meat imports of Namibia must comply with the requirements of the existing South African labeling regulations, according to a letter of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).
In 2007 DAFF granted the Namibian industry dispensation not to indicate Namibia as country of origin when selling imported lamb and mutton in South Africa. However, this dispensation already expired in 2007 and was never renewed. Subsequently, all imports of Namibia should currently comply with the requirements of the existing regulations.  Read more ...

Discuss risk factors

Producers are advised to discuss the risk factors for the diseases in their area with their veterinarian to compile a control programme, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians belonging to the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVASA), a group of the South African Veterinary Association.
Reports of the following internal parasites were received: roundworms, brown stomach worm, tapeworms and parafilara. As wireworm resistance to anthelmintics is widespread, consult your veterinarian in selecting the anthelmintic groups which are still controlling the parasites on your farm. It is important that you are aware of the codes on the packaging of the dewormers so as to select the correct active ingredient. In the case of brown stomach worm, ask your veterinarian to explain the concept of refugia to you when using dewormers. Read more ...

Sideways movement expected

Internationally, beef prices are expected to move sideways in the short term with a possible downward pressure as volumes normalize after the festive season, according to ABSA Agri Trends.
The downward pressure in prices will be reinforced by the drought in New Zealand, and prices in that region are expected to only start increasing after farmers receive rains and slaughtering slows down. Normally, during January and February prices follow a downward trend as people have spent too much during the festive season, and the demands on consumers as the new school year stars. The higher than expected volumes traded in December has contributed to the short supply and domestic prices are therefore not expected to decline as sharply as they normally do and will tend to move more sideways.

Mutton prices should remain soft

Internationally, mutton prices should remain soft on the back of softer demand in the market and slow growth in global economies, according to ABSA Agri Trends.
This will be worsened by the fact that New Zealand is experiencing dry spells, which encourages more killing as farmers would like to receive good prices. Demand should decrease over the next weeks as the Chinese New Year holiday is approaching.  Read more ...

Perspective

A comparison of the Namaqua Afrikaner with the Dorper and the SA Mutton Merino with respect to temperament (Study 1) and meat yield (Study 2).
Temperament is defined as an animal’s response to stress and is determined by genetic and environmental effects such as early life experiences. In measuring and selecting for temperament in livestock, producers want animals that are easier to handle . Temperament is linked to production traits. In extensively reared and managed sheep it has been shown that temperament is related to the ability of ewes to rear their lambs.  Read more ...
