Vleisverbruik sal groei

Vleisverbruik sal in die volgende dekade aanhou groei, hoewel makro-faktore verantwoordelik sal wees vir hoër vleispryse en ietwat laer verbruik relatief tot die vorige dekade, het dr Ferdinand Meyer van BFAP (Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy) by die konferensie gesê.
Hy het gesê ‘n toename in inkomste sal steeds ‘n kritiese rol in verbruikersgroei speel. Relatiewe pryse en verbruikersvoorkeure sal egter bepaal watter tipe vleis die verbruiker gaan verkies.

Chances of buying a poor steak is high

In the quest for yield and efficiency the chances of a consumer buying steak of a poor quality are often very high, said Dr Phillip Strydom of the Agricultural Research Centre at the conference.
He pointed out that packaging is not related to tenderness and some claims have to be regarded with caution, while price and tenderness are only related to extremes. This was some of the findings made in a quality survey conducted amongst butcheries and retails stores where price, tenderness and other tributes were investigated. The study included fresh and vacuum packed meat, while labelling were also investigated in relation to brand names, aging claims and quality claims.
Locally and in other countries, carcass weights have increased by almost 20% in the new millennium. Variation in itself already poses a problem during killing, processing and chilling, Dr Strydom said.

Classification system under the spotlight

Research relevant to the current South African Classification system will be presented during the 12th Meat Symposium on 7 November 2014 at the University of Pretoria, said Prof Hettie Schönfeldt of Red Meat Research and Development SA.

Internal parasites declining

With colder temperatures in winter the infestation rate of most roundworm species (especially wireworm) are declining in the summer rainfall areas, according to monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians belonging to the Rural Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVASA).
However reports of infestations, especially in small stock, are still received. In the winter rainfall areas brown stomach-worm infestations are on the increase.
Beware of certain parasites such as wireworm and brown stomach-worm hibernating (hypobiosis) in winter causing serious problems in early spring.

Mutton prices continues to move sideways

Internationally, prices will continue to move sideways in the short term because of enough supply in the market and softer demand.
There is a potential upward movement in prices due to the improvement in demand after October and the months towards the end of the year as Christmas time will trigger more demand. Locally, prices will continue to move sideways due to moderate demand during winter. No major price increases can be expected in the short term and the red meat outlook is positive.

Perspektief
