Beef prices expected to move upwards

Internationally, beef prices are expected to move upwards in the short to medium term due to higher demand and beginning of herd building in the US. Domestic prices are expected to move sideways in the short term with an upward movement in the medium term due to higher demand towards December, according to ABSA Agri Trends.

Mutton market trends

Internationally, prices should continue to increase due to lower slaughtering's in the Oceanic countries and higher demand in the Northern Hemisphere. Locally, the prices will move sideways in the short term with a possible upward movement in the medium term due to lower supplies because of the effects of the drought conditions.

The world’s growing and still more affluent population has caused a large increase in worldwide meat consumption during the last five decades. Projections tell us that these trends are likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

Research and development on climate change and greenhouse gasses in support of a vibrant livestock industry

It is important that methods or innovative ways are developed and put in place to reduce the GHG production from livestock and to mitigate the effects of climate change on livestock production, according to a research article delivered by Dr M.M. Scholtz, Prof H.C. Schönfeldt and G.M. Schutte at the recent SASAS congress, which was held in Bloemfontein.

Application not successful

At a LAFIF meeting, the Director Animal Health of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) informed the meeting that the department’s application to re-zone South Africa and re-instate the country’s Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) free status was not successful.

Presidents-toekenning aan Gerhard Schutte

Gerhard Schutte, hoofbestuurder van die RPO, het tydens die pas afgelope kongres van SASAS (South African Society for Animal Science) die Presidentstoekenning van prof Eddie Web, president van SASAS, ontvang vir die uitmuntende bydrae wat hy tot dierewetenskappe en die veebedryf gelewer het.

Parasites still abundant

May usually has low temperatures with frost, but in many parts of the country day temperatures were over 25°C and with late autumn rains, parasites were still abundant, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians in South Africa.
