Congratulations, Dr Modisane

Dr Botlhe Michael Modisane, who was elected a member of the  World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Council two years ago, was nominated and elected to Vice- President of the World Assembly at the 82nd general session.

Dr Modisane is responsible for Animal Production and Health at the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The OIE 82nd general session was attended by over 850 participants, representing member countries of the OIE as well as numerous international, intergovernmental, regional and national organisations.

Animal health cannot be state’s responsibility alone

"Livestock farmers will, in future, have to take much greater responsibility for the health of their livestock. This issue cannot be the responsibility of the Directorate Animal Health alone. This is also enshrined in Section 11 of the Animal Diseases Act, which places the responsibility of protecting herd/animal health in the hands of the owner."

Internal parasites remains a problem

Although conditions in the summer rainfall area are not so conducive for new wireworm infestations, there were still numerous reports of losses due to this parasite, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians in South Africa.
Farmers should be aware that bankrupt worms are more prevalent during cooler temperatures. In the winter and non seasonal rainfall areas brown stomach worm can cause severe problems. Now is the time to evaluate which drug groups are still effective on your farm so you can plan with your veterinarian which actives to use next season.

Beef prices: sideway movements expected

Internationally, beef prices are expected to move sideways to upwards in the short term with a possible sideways movement in the medium term due to strong demand and tight supply, according to ABSA Agri Trends.

Domestic: Local beef prices traded higher during the past week compared to the previous week.

Improved demand for sheep meat

Internationally,prices will continue to move sideways due to softer demand then move sideways to upwards in the medium term due to improved demand, according to ABSA Agri Trends.

Locally, prices will move slightly sideways in the short term with a sideways maybe downwards movement in the medium term due moderate demand but higher import parity prices can make prices to pick up.

Domestic: The mutton price traded lower during the week of 21 June compared to the previous week.

Skaapvleis het goeie publisiteit verkry gedurende die Kirkwood wildsfees. Skaapvleispublikasies is orals uitgedeel en ten toon gestel. Die baniere en die plakkate het bygedrae tot die feestelike gevoel by die geleentheid. So werk ons almal saam om die verbruiker te bereik en in te lig oor rooivleis en skaapvleis in besonder.

Noordwes hou kongres

Die Noordwes Rooivleisprodusente-organisasie (NWRPO) se Jaarkongres het onlangs naby Vryburg in samewerking met NWK Beperk as hoofborg plaasgevind.
  
Die tema van die kongres:  “Die toepassing van presisieboerdery-praktyke in Rooivleisproduksie”, het groot inslag by produsente gevind. Die kongres is op die eerste dag toegespreek deur Jan Louis van Zyl, Toekomskundige en Hoof van Kommersiële Landboubemarking- en Inligting by Eerste Nasionale Bank, wat ʼn uitdagende tyd vir Landbou voorspel het, inaggenome die verskeie uitdagings wat daar tans heers soos stakings, werkloosheid, die swak ekonomiese groei en verskuilde politieke agendas.

Wêreld vleisbedryf trek saam

Die 20ste Internasionale Vleissekretariaat (IMS) Kongres gehou tussen 14 tot 16 Junie in Beijing, China. Gerhard Schutte en Jaco Maré het dit namens die nasionale RPO bygewoon.
  
Die IMS is die spreekbuis van die internasionale vleisbedryf en verteenwoordigers van 43 lande het die Kongres bygewoon.
