Beef prices expected to trade upwards

Internationally, beef prices are expected to trade upwards in the short term supported by continued growth in demand and by tight supplies in the market,
according to ABSA Agri Trends.

Domestic beef prices are expected to continue and trade higher, following seasonal trends and supported by good domestic demand at this time of the year, especially
with the festive season approaching. From January, we should expect to see drops in prices on the back of lower demand. Weaner prices are expected to also continue to
move upwards in the short term with a sideways movement into the medium term due to higher demand.  Read more ...

Mutton sideways price movement expected

Internationally, mutton prices will continue to move sideways to slightly upwards in the short term due to a slow start to the new season in New Zealand and the expected good demand during this period of the year, according to ABSA Agri Trends.
Australia on the other hand can expect higher prices in the New Year on the back of tighter supplies. Local prices are expected to move sideways to upwards through November and start to move sideways to downward from January in line with seasonal trends. Improved demand during the festive holidays can support the prices.  Read more ...

Veediefstal bekyk

SPCA has its finger on the pulse

The special projects unit, National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA), inspected various facilities in the country with the aim of uplifting welfare standards of animals housed at those facilities. This included but was not limited to airports and border posts.
Welfare concerns were detected at some of the facilities on different occasions and the SPCA presence proved to be a relief to those animals involved as necessary action was taken. The SPCA always educate where possible to try and prevent future problems associated with welfare that may lead to contraventions of the Animals Protection Act, No 71 of 1962. Presentations were undertaken at different  facilities focusing on training employees who are in contact with animals on a daily basis.  Read more ...

Biosecurity is imperative

Biosecurity is the key word to always keep in mind when farming with livestock. It is important to know the disease status of animals bought in before bringing them into the herd, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians belonging to the Ruminant Veterinary Association of South Africa (RuVASA).
There was an increase in the number of reports regarding internal parasite infestations. Plettenberg Bay reported a severe outbreak of a cattle bankrupt worm infestation in calves. Reports of mortalities due to wireworm infestation were received. Familiarise yourself with the five point check how to clinically diagnose problems with worms.  Read more ...

Perspektief

Is branding the way to go?

One of the arguments for change is that the classification systems only allows for classification of meat based on age and fat covering, and cannot guarantee persistency in attributes such as tenderness, consistency and overall quality of the product of a particular class of meat.  Read more ...
