In March, Kurt Metzger re-aligned our satellite dish for our internet connection in Arop village. For part of the job, he needed several of the translators to hold the heavy dish for him.
And part of the job he did alone.
One another problems

Translation problems

Recently Arop translator Emil Ninkure and I were struggling with the various "one another" passages in the NT, wrestling with how to translate each one. In English you can usually say "one another" or "each other."

In Arop it's not that simple. Their word for "one another" doesn't sound right with certain actions, so we have to find another way to say it. In other places, "one another" is included in the verb, e.g. when talking, asking, or arguing with one another.

It's always a challenge and never boring. We started on this because we were in John 13 where Jesus tells the disciples to love one another.

We finished John 14 together and are ready to move on to chapter 15.

Meeting problems

But he has missed our last three Monday and Thursday night live work sessions. I have no idea why. I have not heard from him during that time and neither have my teammates in PNG.

So we have another one another problem: Not working with one another.

Fortunately, like Kurt and the satellite dish, I have many parts of the translation process that I have to work on alone. That's what I'll keep doing until I can get in touch with Emil again.

It's a pleasure to work together with you to get God's Word into Arop and the other languages of the Aitape West area.

Serving our King together,

John Nystrom (& for Bonnie)
Praise and Prayer
Praise the Lord with us for

Good progress in John's gospel thus far.

Good health for Bonnie and me and all our family here in FL.

Please pray for

Emil, that he will be able to work with me this coming Monday night, my last chance to work with him live until after I arrive in Wisconsin.

Bonnie, my mom and me as we travel to Wisconsin via rented motorhome May 1-5. And pray we can continue to limit my mom's contact with others.

For Bonnie and me as we wrap up things here in FL by next Friday. The to-do list is long!

Our partnership team. Some have lost jobs. Some are facing very difficult financial decisions. Almost everyone is struggling in some way with the crisis.

Our translation team, as we try to take advantage of this time when we cannot physically meet with all the translators by moving ahead with the Arop translation. Emil plays a pivotal role in this: it's his translation. So again, pray for him and for my collaboration with him.

What we do
Since 1987 we have been training local Papua New Guinean church leaders to translate the Bible into their own languages and coaching them through the process from first draft to publication.

We serve in the Aitape West Translation Project, which is producing and distributing Bible translations in 11 languages in print, electronic, audio, and video form; training local people to use the translations; and training the local translators to help other translators do the same in still more languages.

We have written about how a tsunami changed the face of Bible translation in Papua New Guinea in our bookSleeping Coconuts. It is available here on Kindle or here in paperback.
