The booklet includes information such as KG admission criteria, procedure of KG application, finding suitable KG, how to seek help if did not get KG place and interview, KG interview skills, knowing your rights and other useful resources. The booklets will be distributed to the parents through various channels and outreaches.

Children's Commission

On 27th December, Unison and a group of ethnic minority youths have joined a Children’s Forum organized by the The Hong Kong Committee on Children’s Rights, and meet the newly elected district councilors (DCs) from various districts to discuss the issues that are concerning the children. In this exchange platform, not only the problems which ethnic minorities are facing, like the under-representation and discrimination , have been raised, but also the plans and thoughts of the DCs in dealing with it have also been shared. We look forward to have further collaborations with the DCs in the coming terms!

Unison talk

On 28th November, Unison had organized the last Unison talk in this year. This time we have rearranged the seats into a big circle. The new format had successfully sparked off a lot of discussions between the participants. We are glad to see that happening since it means that our participants are not only receiving information but also reflecting the the content they have learnt.

Parents Workshop

In December, Unison conducted 2 talks for KG and Primary school parents. One was conducted on 6th Dec in primary school on the topic Parental Involvement in secondary school choices. The other one was on 13th Dec in the Kindergarten located at Yau Ma Tei on the topic Parents role and support in Children education. Both schools and parents found the workshop informative, gained information about school selection and importance of parental involvement in children education.

Outreach and Home visits

In November, Unison did one outreach at the primary school and a park in Sham Shui Po district and four home visits for home tutor matching on Chinese subject for ethnic minority children living in Yau Ma Tei and Shatin areas. The primary and secondary level students studying in various Chinese and English medium schools without much support on Chinese were provided with the Chinese volunteer tutors.

Scholarship camp

On 21st and 22nd December, Unison organised an overnight camp for the scholarship awardees at the Lady Maclehose Holiday Village in Sai Kung. The awardees bonded over fun activities, games and late night stories and impromptu games. At the camp we had an interactive street law session on Human Rights with emphasis on right to education under United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC). This is the first session in a series of 4 sessions planned for the scholarship year. The awardees found the format refreshing and are eager for the other sessions. The sessions are planned and executed by Ms. Lindsay Ernest (The department of Law, Centre for Comparative and Public Law, HKU) and lawyers from Mayer Brown.

Annual planning

On 10th and 16th December Unison staffs evaluated our work of 2019 and planned for 2020. With creative ideas and strong determination we are all set to strive for racial equality and equal opportunities for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

School talks, JUPAS consultation and Identity exploration workshop

On 25 & 27 November we engaged Unison awardees as consultants for F6 students of Delia Gleepath for JUPAS choices. This is one of the very crucial time for F6 students where they contemplate their career options and think about university programs. The F6 students found Unison awardees' advice helpful and enlightening. In the previous month we conducted 4 school talks for F1, F5 and F6 students. The topics were Exploring Identity and HK citizenship, Importance of Chinese learning and Mock Interview workshops. In total we catered to a combined number of 250 students.  We had a total of 16 Unison awardees who facilitated the talks.

We are always looking for smart, organized and capable individuals who are passionate about racial justice. If you fit the description, reach out to us for internship or volunteering opportunities!
