Meeting with the Education Bureau

On 20 May, Unison met with the Education Bureau to discuss about education policies related to ethnic minorities. Unison suggested the EDB to establish a robust "Chinese as a second language" policy, enhance its monitoring on the use of funds, and collect relevant data systematically to ensure the progressive Chinese learning of ethnic minority students. Besides, the Education Bureau acknowledged that it’s time to review whether to revise or abolish the list of former-designated schools in Appendix 3 of the Primary One Admission Application for children who “cannot use Chinese as a medium of learning”.

Meetings with District Council

Unison has been nominated as a member in the Working Group on Community Integration under the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, and to advise the government on community integration polities towards the district. The first meeting was held on 22 Jun. Career Exposure and Development Workshop

On 16 June HandsOn Hong Kong, Moody’s and Unison organised a workshop for ethnic minority youth on Career Exposure and Development. The workshop was conducted on Zoom. 15 ethnic minority youth and 15 corporate volunteers from Moody’s were divided into groups where corporate answered the burning questions of youth on career pathways. The youth found the sharing from experienced professionals fruitful.

Primary One Admission (POA) 2020/21

Unison made posts on POA to update parents on “knocking door procedure” and the latest arrangements by the Education Bureau for 2020/21 school year. After the Central Allocation results were announced; Unison received many enquiries from ethnic minority parents on registration, knocking door procedure and change of schools. Unison guided and followed up with the parents and we are pleased that the children were able to enroll in the schools of their choice.

Online Chinese Enhancement Class

With the support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club COVID-19 Emergency Fund, Unison has been providing online Chinese Enhancement Class since May to enable ethnic minority children of kindergarten and lower primary to maintain a Cantonese language environment, particularly the kindergarten kids who are still under school suspension. Our classes are provided in small groups according to their Chinese ability and are held 4 times a week.

We are also encouraged to see the children’s progress and how eager they are to learn, here is a moving story from one of K3 students:

A 5-year-old (K3) student who is in Unison's online Chinese Enhancement class called Unison: "It is time for class now. How can I get in?" His mother who usually helps him to log into the Zoom class was not at home. He was in the care of his grandparents who didn't know how to operate the device. Our staff guided him on phone and he was able to log in. After the class he sent us a voicemail "thank you (teacher) for helping me, because of you, I can join the class."

This reinforces the belief that ethnic minority children are motivated to learn. They just need the right support to strive, do you agree?

It is time for class now. How can I get in?"

下課後,小朋友特意錄了一段錄音,發給那位幫助他上課的融樂會姐姐:"thank you (teacher) for helping me, because of you, I can join the class."

Online tutorial

The first phase of online Chinese Tutorial for ethnic minority students has been successfully completed. To review and to consolidate the feedback from our tutors, Unison held an evaluation and sharing session on 30 June via Zoom. According to the feedback from our tutors, students are motivated to study and their Chinese ability has gradually improved. Tutors are pleased with the active involvement of parents who showed concern on their children’s study. Unison’s training on the use of technology and our support on providing learning devices enabled parents to coordinate with tutors themselves and guide their children.

Staff training in EM service

On 23 June, Unison organized a staff training for the ethnic minority service team in Yan Oi Tong, on the education and integration situation of ethnic minority in Hong Kong. We shared our skills on community engagement, and how we incorporate empowerment elements in our youth and parents work. Participants found the workshop insightful and reflective for their work.

The Mentoring Module is currently underway whereby with mentors’ guidance, participants are firming up their project proposal for the project pitching day.
