Celebration with graduates

In the 2020 and 2021 cohorts, 9 Unison awardees graduated from university. On 23 June we organized a fun dinner and picture taking session at a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui. Our heartiest congratulations to all graduates. It is such a proud moment for all of us. We wish you success. Chase your dreams!

Everyday Racism?

On 9 June, China Daily conducted an interview with our Executive Director Phyllis Cheung for their upcoming documentary that explores racism in Hong Kong. In the interview, Phyllis shared the daily microaggressions faced by ethnic minorities especially in public sectors, and the gaps in the current Race Discrimination Ordinance.

Youth focus group on education

On 18 July, Unison held a focus group discussion with the youths on issues of education for ethnic minorities. We discussed various issues including de facto racial segregation in schools and the lack of mention of ethnic minorities’ contribution in the history subject. The youths will submit suggestions to the government to rectify the current situation.

Parents focus group on education

On 21 June, Unison conducted a Parents Focus Group to discuss the issues faced by ethnic minority children and to understand their perspectives. The group had an insightful sharing on the difficulties faced in online learning during COVID-19, learning support provided by schools and discrimination faced in local mainstream schools. They also put a limelight on insufficient resources of the necessary help provided to NCS students in Chinese learning and how parents had to face extra burden in seeking outside resources for them.

Workshop for Unison awardees

In the month of June we organized 2 workshops for Unison awardees. On 12 June we had a face-to-face session on human rights: the structure on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the various human rights treaty bodies and reporting cycles. The format was via Street Law delivered by lawyers from Mayer Brown. On 23 June we had a workshop on financial literacy which was organized by HandsOn Hong Kong and Moodys. The workshop was on Zoom which covered the basic concept of money management.

School workshops
學校

On 17 and 25 June, Unison delivered workshops in SAHK Shek Wai Kok Pre-school Centre and Kit Sam Lam Bing Yim Secondary School respectively for teachers and students. We gave tips to pre-school teachers on serving ethnic minority students with special educational needs and conducted 4 interactive cultural sensitivity workshops for Form One students in the mainstream secondary school. The participants were very responsive and we debunked myths towards the marginalized ethnic community in Hong Kong.

On 10 June, Unison conducted “Meeting People from Different Careers” workshop for Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo No.2 College).  Thanks to four volunteers from different careers and backgrounds, the students had an opportunity to broaden their horizons and understand the workings of society.

On 18 June, Unison conducted an evaluation meeting to receive feedback from parents regarding the ongoing Chinese enhancement classes and Chinese tutorials. 18 parents joined the evaluation meeting. It was amazing to see their enthusiasm and their sharing of the improvements they observed in their kids after five months of joining the programme. They highly appreciate the techniques of the teachers, making Chinese learning fun and interactive. One parent mentioned the classes not only helped her K3 child to smoothly transition to P1, she also learn Chinese through reveiwing the lessons with her child after every class. The kids are enjoying their school life more and participate more actively in school activities as their understanding of the language has improved. The ethnic minority children have shown more interest in writing Chinese characters!

Parents talk on kindergarten admission

On 27 June Unison delivered a talk for parents on kindergarten admission. The talk was organized with Kriti Learning Centre. As all parents were Nepalese, the talk was done in English with interpretation in Nepali language. We spoke of admission procedures, selection criteria, factors to consider when choosing a school and admission support measures for ethnic minority. The parents found the talk very useful. If you want to organize a similar talk for ethnic minority parents, please drop us an email or call us.
