Sim card / Laptop distribution  派發上網用電話卡及手提電腦

During the month of April, ethnic minority families without stable internet connection for their children in need of online learning during the pandemic were distributed sim cards donated by Hong Kong Innovation Foundation. The sim cards were distributed via self-pick up at Unison office and by post.

With the generous support from EMpower Covid-19 emergency Funds; Hong Kong Unison was able to distribute laptops to eligible families having financial difficulties to help solve online learning problems for children studying in primary and secondary schools. Unison was able to cater 13 families.

另外,融樂會亦感謝EMpower Covid-19 emergency Funds的慷慨捐款,使我們能購置手提電腦,送予十三個家中面臨財政困難的家庭,幫助他們就讀中、小學的兒童解決網上學習困難。

One-to-One Online learning  一對一網上補習

Unison reached out to many families to find out the learning needs and situation of ethnic minority children during school closure. To help meet with the Chinese language needs and learning of ethnic minority children, Unison started One-to-One Free Online Tutoring in April, 2020.

On 24th April 2020, a tutor briefing session via zoom was conducted. Around 13 Unison awardee tutors participated in the briefing session. We discussed about the purpose of online tutoring, their roles as tutors and guidelines during the session.

Meeting with district councillor

On 6th April, Unison and our awardee, an ethnic minority university student virtually met with Kwai Tsing district councillor to discuss the needs and brainstorm possible opportunities to engage the ethnic minority in the district. We had a fruitful discussion with the chairman Mr SIN Chung-kai and the vice chair of the Community Affairs Committee Miss WONG Pit-Man.

Civic Participation and Voter Campaign

On 5th April Unison organised a workshop on Civic Participation for the ethnic minority youth on Zoom. Although the workshop was conducted virtually, it was a super interactive and engaging one. Credit goes to our versatile team and the enthusiastic youth for the impassioned discussion. We also kick started the “Register as a Voter Campaign” where each youth engages with 5 people in their surroundings and inspire  them to register as a voter before the deadline of 2nd May 2020. Stay tuned to our Facebook for updates on the campaign.

Career Workshops for YCCECE

On 9th and 16th April Unison conducted 2 workshops for Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) via Zoom. The topics were CV Writing,  Interview Skills, and Mock Interviews. The workshops were organised by Federation for Self-Financing Tertiary Education (FSTE). Unison awardees joined the workshop as facilitators in the breakout rooms.

Cultural sensitivity training was conducted on 28th March and 3rd April via Zoom to students of Early Childhood Education Programme at Open University. Students agreed that their sensitivity towards ethnic minority children was raised especially during kindergarten admission.

Follow up with stranded cases in Pakistan and India
With the lockdown measures due to the COVID19, some stranded ethnic minority Hongkongers from Pakistan and India have reached out to us for help. We have been providing information and emotional supports, and to connect and guide them to various departments and parties like the immigrations, the consulate and the legislative councillors who showed concern on this matter.

Intern introduction

This is Rosemary Samekham, an undergraduate social science student who is most passionate about contributing creative ideas in bringing positive changes to the world. I am most interested at topics about human rights, gender equality, and Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong. When not making a change, I can be found skateboarding, reading books, or practicing archery.
Sophia is an Indian-Hongkonger and currently studying Journalism in Hong Kong Baptist University. As a budding journalism student I want to raise awareness on discrimination faced by Hong Kong ethnic minorities. I am excited to intern at Unison and hopes to learn in detail more about discrimination issues and laws. I am a voracious reader. Agatha Christie and Stephen King are my favourite authors.

We are looking for smart, organized and capable individuals who are passionate about social justice and racial equality. If you fit the description, please reach out to us for internship or volunteering opportunities!
