MAD! (Make A Difference!) Summer Conference 2020

On 23 and 24 Aug, Hong Kong Unison participated in the MAD! Conference as a guest speaker and a judge at the Pitch competition, where senior secondary school students present their well-articulated policy brief to tackle some of the problems they observed in the education system. The Conference was organized by JUNS HK and EOSA HKU.

Legco Lobbying Campaign

2020 was originally scheduled to be the year of LegCo election. Unison takes this opportunity to publish a series of posts and op-ed to review the progress of ethnic minority issues in the past 4 years and the performance of the LegCo members. We hope that the LegCo election can be resumed soon, so that our ethnic minority voters can give a mandate to the candidates who will voice out for them.

Online Chinese Tutorial

The second phase of Online Chinese Tutorial for primary and secondary ethnic minority students has been ongoing from mid-June to August. This is a one-to-one online tutoring through zoom platform where students get to practice reading, writing and oral Chinese. The classes are conducted 3 to 4 times per week for each individual student. The tutors are awardees of Unison Scholarship scheme and are from different ethnic background. They are role models to the students and motivate them in learning Chinese. The parents feedback is positive as the tutorials have helped students in finishing homework and improving Chinese proficiency. The tutorials are closely supervised by Unison staff to monitor the progress of the students and to evaluate the effectiveness of these tutorials.

HKOTSSA Education Pathways

On 22 Aug Hong Kong Unison in collaboration with HK Outstanding tertiary Students’ Service Association (HKOTSSA) conducted a webinar on Education pathways for F1-F3 ethnic minority students. Two awardees joined the workshop and shared about their journey of career exploration.

Ongoing Masks Distribution

In early Aug Hong Kong Unison distributed masks and hand sanitizers to nearly 50 ethnic minority families through Samyukta Studio HK.

CV Writing and LinkedIn Webinar

On 14 July HandsOn Hong Kong, Moody’s and Hong Kong Unison organised a webinar for ethnic minority youth on CV writing and LinkedIn profile creation. The webinar was presented by 2 Moody’s volunteers followed by a Q&A session. There were many practical tips on how to make your CV stand out, how to use the LinkedIn platform and expand your network. The youth found the webinar very useful.

Mental Health Webinar

On 25 July Hong Kong Unison in collaboration with CoolMinds HK organised a Mental Health Webinar for ethnic minority youth. The workshop focused on educating youth on managing mental health, prevention, early intervention, de-stigmatization, self-care tips and where to get help. The youth were involved in the stimulating discussion and pondered on challenges faced by an ethnic minority with mental health problems.

DSE Result Day Support

Despite the adverse pandemic situation, Hong Kong Unison provided assistance to ethnic minority DSE students on the day of the result release (22 July) and support continued for a week. The DSE support kit on google drive has very useful up to date information about further studies, subdegree programs, diploma programs, Alternate Chinese exam conversion and walkin/online application info. Students and teachers found the resource kit very handy and user friendly - we got 345 clicks in the first week! Our helpline was ringing constantly and students reached out to us through IG, WA, FB and phone call. Our team of staffs, interns and Unison scholarship awardees gave swift responses to the queries.

IFSW Online Conference

Our project manager, Mandy Cheuk, participated in the IFSW 2020 Conference on the Social Work Global Agenda, co-Building Social Transformation. Various renowned speakers pointed out how the systematic oppression worldwide is threatening human rights and social justice. Speakers shared how and why it is important to restore the dignity and wellbeing of the service users through community organizing and citizen engagement, aiming to achieve social change through a political level and change social policy. These are the approaches adopted by Hong Kong Unison too and we are glad to be part of the conference to learn from the overseas experience.

Intern Introduction

Anson is a second-year undergraduate studying at the University of Toronto, majoring in Human Geography and Equity Studies. Little fun fact about me, I enjoy street film photography. Photographs represent the city where we all live in. By studying in the Equity Studies program in UofT, I have learnt more about race inequality and its consequences. I am glad to be an intern at Unison to get real hands-on experience as well as comprehending processes of advocacy work. I believe that every bit of change makes a difference and we should keep on pursuing with our possible abilities under this mutable society.

We are looking for smart, organized and capable individuals who are passionate about social justice and racial equality. If you fit the description, please reach out to us for internship or volunteering opportunities!
