Meeting with the Steering Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs
Together with Unison’s Vice Chair Ms. Puja Kapai, we met with the Steering Committee of Ethnic Minority Affairs on 12th July to discuss about Chinese teaching and learning of ethnic minority children and systematic data collection to monitor implementation of support measures. Many ethnic minority students, after 12 years of primary and secondary education, only have Chinese ability similar to that of primary two children. It is not justifiable and acceptable.

The Government established the Steering Committee on Ethnic Minorities Affairs, under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary for Administration, in July 2018 to enhance internal collaboration in the Government. A total of $500 million has been earmarked in the 2018 Budget for initiatives on ethnic minority employment, education, social welfare and youth exchange.

Consultation on the Review of School Curriculum

The Task Force on Review of School Curriculum is now conducting consultation on the primary and secondary curricula. Unison has summarized some of the recommendations which may impact the education of ethnic minority students and provided guiding questions to facilitate feedback from the ethnic minority communities and stakeholders. The feedback received will be consolidated and submitted to the Task Force as a collective submission. Share your views via this Google form before 2nd October. http://bit.ly/2Ho9dP4.

Connextair at University of Hong Kong

We were invited by Connextiar to conduct a cultural sensitivity training for university student mentors on the kick-off day on 13th July before they met with their ethnic minority high school mentees. About 60 students from across eight universities and two higher diploma institutes joined as mentors and ethnic minority mentees from more than five local secondary schools and four community centres.

JUNS Parents Seminar

On 14th July, the first generation of Nepali university students in Hong Kong (Joint University Nepalese Society JUNS) organized "Conversation with Parents" at Yaumatei Community Centre. Hong Kong Unison was invited as guest speaker to talk to Nepalese parents on relevant education issues. The objective of the event was to help parents analyse the difficulties they face in the local education system and discuss about possible solutions through dialogue. The parents who joined had queries regarding their children's education and parenting skills, which were eventually discussed in a group. The parents liked the overall concept and the effort of such event and also had some good suggestions to make future events more successful.

Unison's Policy Address Committee

We are proud to introduce Unison’s Policy Address Committee (PAC) members to you. The PAC members are Unison's scholarship awardees who are committed to provide a platform to the voices of ethnic minority communities. In the past two months, the PAC members conducted five focus groups with different stakeholders namely, youths, parents, teachers, NGO staff and Chinese tutors. The views of the stakeholders were consolidated into submissions and were sent to the 2019 Policy Address Public Consultation.  Stay Tuned for more updates from the PAC members!!!

Outreach and Home Visits

We conducted three outreaches in August at some parks, markets and ethnic minority shops in Wanchai, Yaumatei and Jordan areas. We approached many ethnic minority parents living in those areas and we introduced and promoted Unison's work on education. Parents showed interests and willingness to communicate with us for guidance on their children education. Unison also did three home visits on home tutor matching during this period.

Citi Progress Award Program

Hong Kong Unison is proud of our scholarship awardees Bashir Henna and Nissar Ahmed who were admitted into the Citi Progress Award Program. They are 2 out of 3 in Asia and 2 out of 16 globally who were selected. The program is a 2-week internship program within Citi's marketing and business in August. The 1st week of internship was in their Hong Kong office and the 2nd week in Singapore. The two awardees had an incredible learning experience and exposure. Thanks to our funding partner EMpower who nominated the students to this program.

Meeting with Children Councilors

On 17th August, at the invitation from the Coordinating Committee for Children’s Council 2019, our ethnic minority parents and students from different grades met with the group of Child Councilors and had a fruitful discussion. Participants shared their experiences and views of being ethnic minority students in the local education system, and the Child Councilors also shared their perspectives and policy suggestions on how the government can better address the difficulties faced by ethnic minorities to learn Chinese.
