The Practice of Right View

Monday Sitting & Walking

Please join us for our weekly sitting and walking practice with Ojai Mindfulness. We practice in the Plum Village Tradition following the lineage of our teacher, the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh.

The practice of Right View is one element of the Noble Eightfold Path as taught by the Buddha. Each of us carries both wholesome and unwholesome seeds in the depths of our consciousness. And the ones that we water are the ones that will grow and thrive. For example, I may have the seed of loyalty that is important to me in my daily life. When I water and support that seed of loyalty, it remains strong. But I also have the seed of betrayal within me that could manifest. Right View also deals with perception, and that's what makes this one of the more challenging elements in my daily life. I may have a perception of a mountain, a flower, or even a loved one. These are the objects of my perception. And our perceptions may not be reality. Right View teaches us to cultivate the absence of all views.

Tonight we will explore this further following our sitting and walking meditation. We will meet from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. We begin with 50-minutes of sitting and walking practice. We will follow the more traditional format by facing the walls for the sitting practice. Following our sitting practice, we will rearrange the room for a teaching and sharing together about Right View.

The Plum Village Tradition is a school of Buddhism named after the Plum Village Monastery in France, the first monastic practice center founded by Thich Nhat Hanh. It is an approach to Engaged Buddhism mainly from a Mahayana perspective, that draws elements from Zen and Theravada. Its governing body is the Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism.

It is characterized by the application of mindfulness to everyday activities (sitting, walking, eating, speaking, listening, working, etc.). These practices are integrated with lifestyle guidelines called the Five Mindfulness Trainings, which bring an ethical and spiritual dimension to decision making and are an integral part of community life.
