The Tale of Kieu

Monday Sitting & Walking

Please join us for our weekly sitting and walking practice with Ojai Mindfulness. We practice in the Plum Village Tradition following the lineage of our teacher, the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh.

We continue our reading on the Noble Eightfold Path following Right View and Right Thinking. Since Right Mindfulness is so significant, we will spend the next couple of weeks on this topic. For this week, it will be on the Seven Miracles of Mindfulness. These are present moment, making the other present, nourish the objects of our attention, to relieve the other's suffering, looking deeply, understanding, and transformation. Our reading begins...

Right Mindfulness is at the heart of the Buddha’s teachings. Traditionally, Right Mindfulness is the seventh on the path of eight right practices, but it is presented here third to emphasize its great importance. When Right Mindfulness is present, the Four Noble Truths and the seven other elements of the Eightfold Path are also present. When we are mindful, our thinking is Right Thinking, our speech is Right Speech, and so on. Right Mindfulness is the energy that brings us back to the present moment. To cultivate mindfulness in ourselves is to cultivate the Buddha within, to cultivate the Holy Spirit.

Tonight we will explore this topic further following our 50-minutes of sitting and walking meditation. We will meet from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. The reading material is available in advance and copies will be available at our gathering.

The Plum Village Tradition is a school of Buddhism named after the Plum Village Monastery in France, the first monastic practice center founded by Thich Nhat Hanh. It is an approach to Engaged Buddhism mainly from a Mahayana perspective, that draws elements from Zen and Theravada. Its governing body is the Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism.

It is characterized by the application of mindfulness to everyday activities (sitting, walking, eating, speaking, listening, working, etc.). These practices are integrated with lifestyle guidelines called the Five Mindfulness Trainings, which bring an ethical and spiritual dimension to decision making and are an integral part of community life.
