May 2022
Letter from the Trustee

Hello WI ASLA Members and Friends,

Happy May! WI ASLA is excited to announce that you will see…and hear… two PR initiatives kick off in May as part of our advocacy and public awareness campaigns.  It will also bring more visibility to our award recipients who honor and celebrate the hard work of landscape architects and their projects here in Wisconsin.

Our first initiative is a complete overhaul of the website which is now live. It is an updated more legible design created “in-house” using a cost-effective platform provided to chapters by ASLA National. It also hosts a more robust catalog of our award-winning projects which we want to draw more attention to as part of our advocacy efforts. A special thank you to Paige Bernhardt for her hard work getting the website ready for May!

For our second initiative, we are trying something new to reach out to the public and community leaders across the entire State of Wisconsin. In May, WI ASLA will be a business partner for Wisconsin Public Radio with a daily sponsorship ad airing throughout the month on its Ideas Network, including its most popular program, Garden Talk, on Fridays.

We are very excited about these new opportunities to extend our voice to the boundaries of the state and beyond.  Be sure to check out our website and tune in to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Jonathan Bronk, Chapter Trustee

Water Management in a Changing Climate: Insecurity

Credits: 1.0 PDH (pending)  |  LIVE Virtual Learning Event
Instructor: Shawn T. Kelly, PLA, FASLA
May 12, 2022  |  2 PM EST

The world is running out of potable water. Our planet is faced with unprecedented changes that are drastically affecting our potable water supplies while inundating the surface of the earth with severe runoff, flooding, and damage from storm events. We will examine the three stormwater cycle diagrams that describe the water cycle. The first diagram illustrates the least impacted natural cycle of rainfall and recharge. The second diagram shows the acceleration and changes to the water cycle from typical human occupation and the built environment. The final diagram examines the middle diagram with the impacts of greater stormwater episodes, occurring with greater frequency, and disastrous results.  The discussion will then proceed into small and large aquifers and the impacts of the altered water cycle on our available potable water supplies.

Lion's Eye Bank of Wisconsin

The non-profit organization Lion’s Eye Bank of Wisconsin is seeking a landscape architect and asked for our help to spread the word. This is NOT exclusive to ASLA members, so please pass this along to any non-members you think would be interested.  Below is more information about the project:

The Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, is planning to build a Tribute Garden at our headquarters located at 5003 Tradewinds Parkway Madison, WI. This garden is to be a celebration for our tissue donors, Lions volunteers, staff, and financial supporters. It will be called the “Journey of the Vision of Sight.” We would like to incorporate the latest landscape designs, technology, and structure to create a space that acts as a place of solace, recognition, and educational learning and can be used as an outdoor event area. The Lions Eye Bank is seeking a landscape architect and or landscape architect firm to develop plans that will achieve these goals. Interested parties should deliver a letter of interest by July 1, 2022, with their compensation requirements at which time we can then provide a more detailed list of proposal requirements and arrange for site tours. We would like plans by September 30, 2022.

If interested, please contact LEBW Chief Executive Officer Stacey Troha for more information at (608) 233-2354 Ext. 209 or email her at
