"Community without love is a crowd" - just one of the gems to come from our series of workshops  with Jim Diers, pictured here in Northland.  It's Top of the South and Canterbury's turn this week.

Two weeks today until Activate!  Have you registered? If not - do it today, there are still limited spaces. In collaboration with 30 community-led initiatives we've put together our best learning event yet, combining a study tour and an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new tools and skills.

Taking you out in busses to neighbourhoods across Auckland and showcasing locally-led change in a wide range of communities. There are scholarships available for small NGOs, community organisations and volunteers active in the Auckland area. Check out all the details here.

When we are not getting over excited by  Activate, we've been spending time developing new products and projects, running workshops with Jim Deirs of course and also with a diverse range of agencies and sectors from sport to waste management. All of which are supporting the use of more effective CLD approaches.

Locally-led solutions is certainly a common theme presently, as agencies and governments alike search for answers to difficult issues facing communities.
But what does that locally-led look like? It is quite simple, start local, build from the aspirations, strengths and assets of that place. Use the wisdom that resides in communities, remove the barriers, do with not too, take time to listen and hear, and you will enable sustainable change.

We continue to push these approaches across the multiple layers and we are looking forward to sharing more of the work we are doing to make it easier for community-led development to thrive.

There is so much energy and innovation amongst our growing network - talk about unleashing capacity! We're not the only ones noticing - we're so proud of Randwick Park who took out the 2017 Community of the Year.

By happy coincidence we filmed local resident Maree Beaven just before Christmas talking about what they've achieved and how - there's a link to the video below, so grab that cuppa and take the time to be inspired.

I've been Thinking... about Value
Donna Provoost, Inspiring Communities Chair

Looking at the big picture  - with all the talk from central government about new approaches to social investment this should be a very exciting time to be working with CLD. But the fact is this approach is missing the most important ingredient – Communities.

We think the time has come to better understand the value of using CLD approaches, and to start integrating them in solutions.

There are many inspiring community initiatives throughout Aotearoa that are making an impact and which have caught our attention. Part of our role is to shine a spotlight on what works and how to improve what doesn’t – so here’s some stories from a community as well as community stories.

Randwick Park
2017 Community of the Year

"When we dont have answers that 's when we invite local services to come in and help us. All together we've achieved an amazing dream."

As part of our My Inspiring Community video series, we sat down with Randwick Park resident Maree Beaven recently. We talked to her about the community-led development approaches and principles they've applied, what they’ve achieved so far and how.

Using ‘It’s not OK’ at Rugby League
By He Tauaa Rugby League Club Acting President Fipe Fa’amoe

We wanted to address a number of incidents that were taking place during the games. Often not from our team but none the less change was needed.

The strength of our club is that we are whanau orientated and supportive of each other. We understand that each of us have a role to play to ensure that we are successful on and off the field. If we can continue with a positive attitude, this filters to our members and their families.
