Senior Netball Update

Our seniors netball have had a great start to the year. With A grade team sitting third on the ladder at 4 wins 4 losses.  Our B Grade is sitting second on the ladder with 5 wins and 1 loss.  C grade is holding fifth position on the ladder with 4 wins and 2 losses.  D is sitting third on the ladder with five wins and 1 loss.  Our 19U team is still sitting on top, undefeated.

Our new players have fitted into the club very well on court and off. We are looking forward to the coming rounds where we know we will be challenged across all grades but hope to continue to play confident and competitive netball.

We have noticed a real difference this year in our support of all grades and this is something that we are focusing on in the netball section of the club. We enjoyed our first three home game afternoon teas and this is something we will be continuing to build upon in the future as we get over to the football after A grade at all home games.

Junior Football update
The 2016 season has got off to a great start and after grading games and some further adjustments we find our under 16s graded in Div 1 , 2 and 4 respectively. Head coach Darren Chirgwin and his team are doing a terrific job with good numbers at training and plenty of parent helpers on match days.

Our Division 2 side headed up by Ben McCarthy, have been rewarded for their great start to the season by being promoted to division 2 and although this is a big step up for these boys we believe that playing at this higher level will enhance their development and give them a serious challenge each Saturday. The Div 4 team are also tracking along nicely and coach Matty Johnston has got the lads humming and it's great to see all these lads really enjoying their footy.

The under 14s are also enjoying a solid start to the year with the our three teams in Division 1, 3 and 5 respectively. Head coach Vin Lazarro is pleased with how the boys in all three teams are developing and continually improving each week. Again it's great to see so many parent
helpers put their hand up and assist at either training or on match day.

In the Newtown Little league we are presenting 3 under 9, 2 under 10 and 11 and 1 under 12 teams this year. Welcome to our 1st year under 9 coaches Nic Phipps, Murray Schroeder and Byron Crowe and our returning coaches Tommy Gilligan, Clint Peake, Al Pollard, Craig Dowling and Trav Robertson. Remember to thank these guys for their efforts along with their managers and helpers in preparing the next generation of St Marys Players.

Although we are only part of the way through the season I would like to give a special welcome to Daryl Black our under 16 co-ordinator and Mick King who is doing the job in the under 14s for all their assistance so far this year.

Finally we are providing a game of footy to more than 320 boys each weekend and this doesn't happen without volunteers and we are fortunate to have a wonderful core group of people  willing to give up a bit of time to be involved in your club. But we can never have enough helpers so if you are able to assist in any small way please speak to your team manager, Coordinator or coach or if it is something else around the club that you would like to get involved in please feel free to have a chat with me at any time.

Good luck to all of our teams and Go Saints!!!

Junior Netball Update

We have had a great start to the season in our Junior netball.  We have five 11U teams playing Tuesday night with lots of new players joining the Club.  We have nine 13U teams, two playing Saturday and seven teams playing Friday night.  We have eight 15U teams, two playing Saturday and six playing Friday night and we have five 17U teams - three Friday night and two Saturday night.

We have some new junior coaches this season and several new adult coaches and all are doing a wonderful job with the girls showing improved skills each week.

Our Saturday teams have had a strong start with all teams sitting in the top five on the ladder.  After some extra grading our Friday night teams have made a strong start.  Our 13U Div 3 teams are one, two and three on the ladder.  Many of our other teams are all in the top four of the Friday night ladder.

The girls have made a great start - even though we have had a very wet start to the season.  We had a hectic night of team photos and have had our 11/U pizza night with our 13U pizza night to continue.

We look forward to welcoming  Renee Garring our A Grade Coach to training in the coming week to work on skills and drills with some of our junior teams.

AUSKICK

Our Auskick crew have had an amazing start to their season.  Approximately 80 kids take the field each Friday night. Program Coordinator Damian Mc Keegan and his band of helpers do a wonderful job.

Volunteering

St Mary’s Sporting Club is run by volunteers and without the support of the many volunteers we have year in and out we would find it very difficult to run the Club.

Girls Football - expression of interest

St.Mary’s Sporting Club is looking to start an exciting new chapter for the club by introducing a girls football side or sides to represent the club in 2017.

To ensure this is a success planning is commencing now, so we would like to get a gauge of current members who would like to be involved in this new venture and an interest from girls who would like to look at playing.

All games will be played on a Sunday allowing any girls currently playing netball at the club to also play football without there being a clash.

The teams will fit seamlessly into our junior program with all of the support and development programs the club is currently putting in place being applicable for the girls

Could you please pass this email onto your friends, sisters, relations or anyone else who you think may want to be involved next year.

To make this a success we also need to establish a strong committee to get this off the ground. Any girls who are interested in playing next year or any parents who want to be involved in setting this up please contact the club at info@stmaryssc.com with your details or alternatively give Kevin McMahon a call on 0457 507 202.

In 2017 AFL Barwon will have the following divisions in place so based on interest St.Mary’s will decide which grades we will enter:
1.Under 12's
2.Under 18's

If there is enough interest generated AFL Barwon will be dividing the under 18 competition into an under 15's and under 18's.

SMSC Player Development Program
St Mary’s Sporting Club are currently in the process of documenting and constructing a player development program for the whole club which we are hoping to release within the next month. The club will be investing funds into the program which will cover both on field and off field development. Club welfare managers will be appointed, and a significant number of programs developed to support our players off field to help them and develop all aspects of their lives whilst at the club.

One of the programs will be in relation to safe driving. The company has had discussions with TAC about a program they will set up for our young players over the next few years.

Prior to launching the development program, an opportunity has arisen for some of our young 18 – 25 year old to attend a 2 hour safe driving course free of charge. The normal price is $300 for the course and has a number of added benefits including:
  • Free place at Greenlight an accredited driver education program (valued at $300)
  • Huge insurance discount (equates to going from rating 6 to rating 1 - a 60% no claims bonus discount based on an 18 year old) – participants will get a car insurance quote after the course, but regardless will be moved to a rating one driver.
  • Reduced personal loan interest rate or lease on first or next car
  • To retain the offer participants must not lose any demerit points or have an at-fault claim
This is a great opportunity to learn some key skills for driving as well as having great financial benefits such as reducing their insurance by at least 50% by automatically becoming a level one driver.

Whilst the course was developed for 18-25 year olds they are also offering us the opportunity to have 17 year old learner drivers attend the course.

If anyone is interested or has any questions please let Kevin McMahon know kevin.mcmahon@ndis.gov.au mobile 0457 507 202
