The 31-day International Women's Day celebration has been set aside to acknowledge and pay tribute to all women for their contributions throughout history and in society at large.
You may be wondering, “Why do we need to designate a particular month to learn about women?” As recently as the 1970s, women’s history was not a part of American children’s grade school curriculum or recognized by the general public as being an integral part of the country’s overall development.
Fast forward some years later and in 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed that all citizens should hold women in esteem and recognize the roles women have in shaping their homes, schools, communities, government and so much more. Ever since, every president has honored women this way.
This month the team and I here at Joanna International have been very busy. I have been speaking and encouraging women to reflect on our vast history and embrace the opportunities we have today to live our best lives and change our future for the better by taking the best care of our health through more exercise and better food choices, being more involved and active in our children's lives and living authentically with intention.
We kicked off the month hosting our first annual International Women's Celebration and we had a great turn out. We also began a free webinar working through one key each week from my book Becoming an Unstoppable Warrior Mom. You can get registered by completing the sign-up form. The first recorded webinar will be sent to you to catch up what with what we discussed from week one.
With this celebration at hand I want to remind you of the importance of living for today. Making the most of each and every day. Sometimes it seems like we're always putting off our goals until some vague time in the future called "Once." "Once the New Year rolls around...", "Once the baby arrives...", "Once I have my new job...", "Once I retire...", "Once the kids are in school...", "Once the kids are out of school...".
Sound familiar? By waiting for "Once" to get here, we waste time and frustrate our desire to do what we really want. It's a fact of life that every time one potential distraction disappears, it's quickly replaced with a new one. There will always be something that can stand in your way - if you let it.
Ask yourself: are these distractions real reasons, or just good excuses for putting something off? Goals cannot be started in the future. The laws of time and nature dictate that you can only act in the present. You are here, today. So are your goals. The only good time to start is right now.
We women have the opportunity to make history with our lives and leave a legacy. Let's commit ourselves to "Make TODAY count!" and to live in a way that changes the world as we live authentically and consistent with the esteem and recognition associated with honoring all women every day, not only during International Women's Month. Set your goals today and take action beginning TODAY to achieve them!
