Just a couple of reminders about club paddling sessions;
Obviously parking at the boathouse is a bit of a problem at the moment due to the construction work on the new equipment store. There are some things we can all do to help;
Please park considerately and neatly to make the best use of the available parking spaces
Please don't obstruct access to the containers as this makes it difficult (or impossible) to get boats out and return them at the end of the session.
If the car park is full you can drive down onto the beach area to the left of the slipway - please drive carefully and look out for pedestrians, cyclists and dogs
Please don't park on the waterfront to the right of the slipway - for safety reasons we like to keep this area clear from obstructions
Please do not park on the access road down to the slipway -we need to keep this clear in case of emergency
Water Safety As you aware we have a lot of novice paddlers on the water during club sessions, particularly during the summer months. For safety reasons novice paddlers must stay in the area between the clubhouse and the first line of yellow buoys where we can provide safety cover, unless they are accompanied by a competent paddler. Only competent paddlers are allowed to paddle out beyond the first line of yellow buoys without supervision.
In line with British Canoeing guidelines "competent" at Manvers Lake is deemed to be BCU 2 Star standard. We are aware that we have some experienced paddlers who do not hold the BCU 2 Star Award - if you feel you should be allowed to paddle unsupervised outside of the "safe" area please talk to our Head Coach (Bob Finch)
SANDSEND WEEKEND - 4th/5th JULY
We are running a club weekend to Sandsend near Whitby over the weekend of July 4/5th. There are lots of paddling opportunities available including the River Esk, surfing on Sandsend beach or for the more serious with proper sea kayaks a sea trip.
We will be camping at High Straggleton Farm http://www.highstraggleton.co.uk/ which is just off the A174 between Whitby and Sandsend - please make your own bookings for camping or caravan pitches. Or you can just come up for one day.
If you want to go on the trip please add your name to the list on the noticeboard at the boathouse - please leave contact details so we can contact you if there are any changes. Please also let us know if you need to borrow any club equipment for the trip (note the club makes a small charge for borrowing club equipment).
This was a very enjoyable weekend spent in the beautiful surroundings of Llangollen Vale in North Wales. For once the weather was kind - there were actually complaints about it being too hot.
On Saturday we decided to paddle up the Llangollen Cnal to Horseshoe Falls - a distance of 3 miles - and then run the river back down to Llangollen. This is harder than it sounds - unusually the canal has a noticeable flow and we were all relieved to reach Horseshoe Falls after 3 mile of upstream paddling!
On the way we stopped off to inspect the Serpents Tail - a Grade 3 rapid which we would be running during our trip back to Llangollen. Although the river was very low this rapid was still a challenge - in some ways it is harder at low levels as finding a clear route becomes more difficult.
Once at Horseshoe Falls we launched on to the Dee and paddled down to the top of Serpents Tail. With Nigel, Trevor and Becki providing bank cover Dan, Steve and me got back on the water to run the rapid. We then had a 5 minute wait while a group of three rafts went down the river - each one getting stuck in the narrow section at the bottom of the rapid. Finally it was our turn - I went first, followed by Dan and finally Steve. All three of us made it safely to the bottom of the rapid - a special mention must go to Steve "Whitebeard" Evans for taking on a Grade 3 rapid so early in his paddling career (with a few wobbles on the way down!)
We then continued on downstream with just a few easy rapids (and fallen trees) to negotiate before we reached Mile End Mill and a coffee stop. This was the scene of Steve's swim - having survived Serpents Tail he managed to fall in on the most innocuous of drops at the top of the site (this has now been christened "Whitebeard Falls" in his honour). After leaving Mile End Mill we paddled down to Llangollen and Town Falls, which we decided to portage due to the low water level.
After a leisurely start on Sunday morning we headed for the town of Trevor (really!) and the Pontcysyllte aquaduct which carries the Llangollen canal over the River Dee. Trevor and Steve decided to paddle across the aquaduct which provided some great photo opportunities before heading for home.
A really good trip - definitely one to be repeated (soon!)
SWIM TABLE UPDATE Just one swim reported - Steve Evans who having successfully negotiated the Serpents Tail rapid on the Dee (Grade 3) contrived to fall in on a very small drop at Mile End Mill. This spot has now been renamed "White Beard Falls" in his honour!
There are a few swims missing of the table - if anyone can let me know a full list of swimmers from the slalom weekend I will update the table.
