COME CELEBRATE LAMIA ON JULY 10

As Lamia moves on to new life adventures, we invite the community to gather on Sunday, July 10 at 10:00 worship and 11:30 Coffee Hour to thank her for her dedicated care of the St. Luke’s community these last seven years, and to bless her on her way. We also invite everyone to contribute generously to a Lamia Gratitude Fund to express our thankfulness. Checks can be placed in the Sunday offering plate or mailed to the Office but should note: Lamia Gift in the memo. Giving on-line is also encouraged.

BILINGUAL WORSHIP & CONVERSATIONS OVER LUNCH
SUNDAY, JULY 17

In a time where the most basic of LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack in what is supposed to be the Land of the Free, we want to celebrate the Brave LGBTQ+ community. We are looking forward to celebrating and honoring our very existence with our allies during the July 17th, 11am, bilingual on-campus Pride Worship, followed by lunch and group conversation. There will be activities for children after worship, including a piñata and reading corner. Please join us for the culmination of a month of Pride joy! Anyone interested in helping decorate or tear down, or in providing food, is encouraged to contact McKenzie Stribich (562.519.4652).

IT'S TIME FOR SUMMER HOUSE CHURCH!

Welcome to summertime 2022 as we invite you to attend one or more of our weekly Summer House Church gatherings! The purpose of Summer House Church is to offer a time to deepen our relationships with each other as we reflect on how we experience spirituality in our daily lives.

We begin with a potluck dinner – a time to eat and socialize. Then we move into small groups of 4-6 people for conversation time. Each week will have a different topic to ponder. We end the evening together with a blessing, prayer or poem by 8:30 p.m. Choose to attend one or as many as you'd like.

Our hosts will provide a main course dish. Guests, please RSVP by Tuesday (the day before gathering) with the number of attendees and what potluck dish you’ll bring to share. (EX: appetizer, green salad, other type of salad, side dish, dessert, bread, wine, other beverages.) See you there!

With the awareness that Covid is still with us, there will be outdoor spaces for eating and conversations as much as possible. We request that people wear a mask if they have not been vaccinated. Masks are optional for those who have been fully vaccinated..

JOIN OUR CLEAN UP/ CLEAR OUT TEAM ON TUESDAY

Before Lamia leaves, we want to bring order to the Parish Office. Lamia knows where things are, and what hasn’t been touched in seven years. A team is gathering this Tuesday from 10:00 to 2:00 to clear from the Office that which we don’t need, and organize what we want to keep. Join us if you are available on Tuesday. If you want to help with organizing our Archives, please contact Bill Weber.
80TH GENERAL CONVENTION MEETING IN BALTIMORE

Rev. Antonio and the rest of the deputies and Bishops of the General Convention are in Baltimore this weekend for an unusual General Convention. While we can all watch on-line, there will be no spectators or exhibit hall. As always, the General Convention will set the mission priorities and budget for the Episcopal Church for the next three years. But this year, the process of legislating and budget making has been streamlined to fit the four-day Convention schedule. The Convention will feature no public events, dinners or receptions; worship will be simulcast in the two Houses (Deputies and Bishops); and mask wearing and frequent COVID testing will be required. Rev. Antonio will report back on The General Convention after worship at 10:00 and 12:30 on Sunday, July 31. Click here to check out the GC80.
SIGN UP TO HOST COFFEE HOUR!

Coffee Hour is actively looking for hosts to fill July 31, and August 14, 21 & 28 slots. If you are interested in hosting, please email Mark Fretland & Ramon Joson or sign up on Sundays after service.
SAVE THE DATE!
AUGUST 21 CELEBRATE OUR WINI WILLIAMS CARTER COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Thanks to all of our generous donors, we received $17,916.00 in 2022 to bring our Wini Williams Carter Community Scholarship Fund total to $76,623.43. In 2023, let’s see if we can increase the fund to over $100,000 so that we can continue giving scholarships for decades to come!

Our newest recipient is Jade Martinez, a graduating senior at Poly High School. During the pandemic, Jade founded “Home Girls that Roll… to keep kids off the streets with wheel on their feet.” In addition, as a member of the Washington Neighborhood Association, she and her mother held “a Wellness Event in which we did aerobics classes and Zumba classes for anyone who wanted to come… and provided fruit, snacks, and water to everyone. It was a beautiful site and heart-warming.”. This fall, Jade will be attending California State University, Fullerton.

On Sunday, August 21, current and former Community Service Scholars will be invited to St. Luke’s so that we can celebrate them, hear about their learning activities in college, as well as their ongoing community work.

COVID-19 POSITIVE CASES ON THE RISE
CONSIDER USING MASKS DURING WORSHIP

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, there is an increasing trend in the number of positive cases of Covid-19. Across the Episcopal Church we are taking precautions to reduce the number of positive cases, like a significant reduction in the number of days, activities, and people for the upcoming General Convention in Baltimore this July.

I have witnessed within The Episcopal Church a 10% infection rate at three recent events, the meeting of the Executive Council in April, the Clergy Conference of the Diocese of Los Angeles in May, and the meeting of the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop that I attended in Baltimore last week.

You can get free KN95 masks at your local CVS. You can also request up to 8 free rapid tests per household. If you have not requested yours yet, I encourage you to do so and have them handy. You can request them HERE.

Let’s stay safe, let’s protect one another,
Rev. Antonio
LET US PRAY WITH YOU

In worship on Sundays and Thursdays, we name in prayer those who have asked us to hold in prayer and homebound members of our community. Our practice is to keep people on the list for 4 weeks unless asked to take someone off sooner or keep them on longer. Please, email the Office or Sister Susan Alice Metzmaker to add someone to our prayer list. Also, on Sunday mornings, please join our prayer partners in the Chapel for prayers of intercession, assistance, and thanksgiving.
SHARE YOUR CHURCH PHOTOS WITH US!
