Report from July's Vestry Meeting

At the July meeting, and with the facilitation of St. Luke’s Treasurer Rob Bellevue, the Vestry continued to learn how to understand St. Luke’s financial reports.  As we are half-way through the year, the Church continues to be in solid financial shape, thanks in great part to the fulfillment of the congregational pledges.  On behalf of the Vestry, we extend our gratitude to all of you for your support.

We also continued our work in fully understanding what it means to call ourselves a beloved community.  We reflected on glimpses of Beloved Community and how they help us understand God’s love for all.  We continued our conversations on the principles to guide our journey toward becoming a Beloved Community.  We expect to engage in congregation-wide conversations on this valuable work by the end of the Summer.

At this meeting, the Vestry also approved an investment of up to $ 25,000 to enhance the video and audio of St. Luke’s streaming capabilities.  We will have follow-up conversations on audio capabilities, and improving support for those with hearing challenges.

We are honored to serve as wardens working with our great vestry members: Claudia Bryan, Ignacio Castor, Dianne Clemensen, Sandra Cruz, Robert Freese, Melody Gray, Cara Nilsen, Jeanne Ortíz, Benji Reed, and Angeles Urban.

IT'S TIME FOR SUMMER HOUSE CHURCH!

Welcome to summertime 2022 as we invite you to attend one or more of our weekly Summer House Church gatherings! The purpose of Summer House Church is to offer a time to deepen our relationships with each other as we reflect on how we experience spirituality in our daily lives.

We begin with a potluck dinner – a time to eat and socialize. Then we move into small groups of 4-6 people for conversation time. Each week will have a different topic to ponder. We end the evening together with a blessing, prayer or poem by 8:30 p.m. Choose to attend one or as many as you'd like.

Our hosts will provide a main course dish. Guests, please RSVP by Tuesday (the day before gathering) with the number of attendees and what potluck dish you’ll bring to share. (EX: appetizer, green salad, other type of salad, side dish, dessert, bread, wine, other beverages.) See you there!

As COVID infection rates rise, Summer House Church asks that participants test before attending if possible. The government is providing eight free tests per person! All SHC hosts will provide outdoor eating and talking space, and everyone is encouraged to wear a mask when not eating.

The Lambeth Conference is a gathering of bishops from across the Anglican Communion for prayer and reflection, fellowship and dialogue on church and world affairs.

As in past gatherings, the Anglican Communion continues to struggle with the great difference of opinions across all the members of the communion.  That difference is more evident on the matter of ordination of women, and same-gender marriage.  Our Episcopal Bishops will be there to be witnesses on the wonderful gift of women clergy, and love that goes beyond gender and gender expression.

According to Bishop John Taylor: "The Human Dignity Call, scheduled for the seventh day, Aug. 2, includes provisions that call on the bishops to reaffirm the 1998 Lambeth gathering’s stance against same-sex marriage by stating that 'it is the mind of the Anglican Communion as a whole that same-gender marriage is not permissible.'”  See the entire write up from Bishop Taylor at this link.

See also, the piece from Bishop Jennifer A. Reddall from the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, entitled “The Lambeth Calls for Whom?,” where she shares how she felt being in a room with Bishops who did not see her leadership as legitimate (because she is a woman), and her perspective on the actions to be taken on same-gender marriage.  You can read her entire piece by clicking on this link.

Please keep the Bishops attending Lambeth in your prayers, especially our Episcopal Bishops.

LET US PRAY WITH YOU

In worship on Sundays and Thursdays, we name in prayer those who have asked us to hold in prayer and homebound members of our community. Our practice is to keep people on the list for 4 weeks unless asked to take someone off sooner or keep them on longer. Please, email the Office or Sister Susan Alice Metzmaker to add someone to our prayer list. Also, on Sunday mornings, please join our prayer partners in the Chapel for prayers of intercession, assistance, and thanksgiving.
