It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

The Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus filled with Christmas spirit on Wednesday, November 30 as the school community joined together to decorate the campus in preparation for the Christmas holiday.

Students gathered in their advisory groups and beautifully decorated Christmas trees around campus, decked the walls, shelves, and nooks of the School with colorful decor, and enjoyed hot cocoa and cookies as they caught up with classmates following Thanksgiving break.

Light snow fell outside the School as the interior was transformed during a wonderful, festive way to kick off Winter Term.

SSM Completes No-Shave November

SSM relaxed its policy against facial hair for No-Shave November, a web-based, non-profit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research, and education. Many students participated in the movement in honor of a friend or loved one, and to illustrate the point that everyone has been affected in some way by cancer. Students also raised $245 during the month through their participation.

“No-Shave November is important to me because many members of our Shattuck-St. Mary’s community have been impacted by some type of cancer, and I think it is safe to say everyone knows someone with cancer,” said Sam Shrout ’17. “For me, my grandfather had prostate cancer, colon cancer, and eventually passed away from undifferentiated thyroid cancer. So I was very glad when SSM agreed to allow No-Shave November to happen.”

Pre-Conservatory Students Earn Individual Honors
Harpist Abigail Hansen ’17 performed with the Rochester (Minn.) Symphony Orchestra at Bethel Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 5 as a result of her winning the “Playing With the Pros” competition, which took place last spring.

On Sunday, November 6, violinist Maria Chirinos ’18 won a performance award in the Mary West Competition and was one of 11 musicians selected to perform in the “Winners Recital” on Sunday, November 13 in Minneapolis at the Lake Harriet United Methodist Church.

Additionally, Maria competed in the Mankato Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition on November 19 and won the Grand Prize, which will include a performance with the Mankato Symphony this coming spring.

ScholarShift Stories: "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time"

Participating Shattuck-St. Mary’s students learned more about autism spectrum disorder and evaluated its depiction of the affliction during a performance of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time” on Wednesday, November 30 as part of a ScholarShift module.

Spearheaded by Dr. Maren LaLiberty, founding director of SSM’s BioScience Center of Excellence, participants learned about autism spectrum disorders before attending the Tony Award-winning play at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis.

Following the performance, students will gather for a final discussion and reflection session where they explore whether it is possible for someone with autism spectrum disorder to be accurately reflected in mainstream American entertainment.
