The University of Minnesota’s Visible Heart Laboratory hosted 26 Shattuck-St. Mary’s BioScience Center of Excellence students on Thursday, January 5 during a hands-on preclinical research session.

During the Lab, students had the opportunity to observe as University of Minnesota scientists conducted preclinical research on cardiac medications. Students also explored the anatomy of a pig and held beating hearts as part of the research under the supervision of Dr. Paul Iaizzo, who has performed research and taught graduate and undergraduate courses since 1990.

The Visible Heart Laboratory is described as a premiere place to perform translational systems physiology research, ranging from cellular and tissue studies to organ and whole body investigations. For more information on the lab, visit

Introducing The New Voices of Prep Boys Hockey

What do you get when you pair an alumnus from the Class of 1975 who played Sabre hockey in the “good ‘ol days” with a former Sabre hockey coach and athletic director who also loves the game? You get Team Summy-Barr!

This dynamic duo had their broadcasting debut at Saturday night’s Boys Prep game against the Chicago Mission and also covered Sunday morning’s rematch. They were strategically perched on the upper mezzanine level of the new rink at center ice. Rick Barr ’75 offers the play-by-play and former coach John Sumner fills in with his colorful commentary. They will be featured on the remaining Boys Prep home game webcasts. Be sure to tune in!

ScholarShift Story: The Art of Cake Decor

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School students traveled to Faribault’s Bluebird Cakery for a crash course on cake decorating and a behind-the-scenes look at a thriving local business on Monday, January 9 as part of a recent ScholarShift module.

Following a short tour of the facility, module participants headed upstairs to the Cakery kitchen. Led by Bluebird Cakery’s professional cake decorator, each participant began by applying a layer of frosting to their plain cake. After evenly distributing their base frosting, students got to work mixing different colors of frosting for application around the edges of the cake. Once the frosting options were prepared, students learned the techniques of creating flower, rosetta, and leaf designs on their cakes before finishing them off.

The group will meet again on Friday to apply some of the techniques learned during Monday’s session and make a cake for friends or a family member.
