All is Calm Tonight!
Don't miss the performance of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Newhall Auditorium. A remarkable true story told in the words of the men who lived it, this moving work captures an astounding moment in history when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together by trading carols, sharing food and drink, playing soccer, and burying the dead. All is Calm weaves written word, iconic WWI songs, patriotic tunes, and Christmas carols together to create a truly unique and profound theatrical event. The show is presented by Theater Latte' Da and is part of the Fesler-Lampert Performing Arts Series. Admission is free to all SSM students, faculty, and staff.

Senior Seeks to Save-a-Bull

Stemming from a lifelong passion for animals, one Shattuck-St. Mary’s senior hopes to raise awareness and funds that will help to Save-a-Bull. Aubrey Stafford ’17 is conducting her senior leadership project in support of the Save-a-Bull Rescue, a local nonprofit based in Minneapolis dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of pit bull dogs and pit mixes in need.

Often misunderstood, stereotyped, and targeted for dogfighting, pit bulls are prevalent in local shelters due to irresponsible breeding and ownership. Aubrey, who grew up with a rescue dog and has an interest in becoming a veterinarian someday, believes that pit bulls are particularly misunderstood. “Pit bulls are not an aggressive breed, they are gentle giants,” Stafford said.

Funds raised will be used for vaccinations, food, procedures to spay and neuter shelter dogs, blankets, toys, treats, and more. To learn more about Save-a-Bull and to donate, visit, or stop by the donation table outside of Morgan Refectory during 5th period through next Thursday.

ScholarShift Stories: Exploring Loving v. Virginia

Students explored the landmark civil rights decision of Loving v. Virginia during a recent ScholarShift module on Wednesday, December 7. Led by History and Economics Instructor Andrea Moyer and Math Instructor Jocelyn Simpfenderfer, the module provided an overview of the climate of segregation and racism that pervaded the south following the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction, leading up to the case of the Lovings nearly a century later.

Students learned about the case of Richard and Mildred Loving through the film The Loving Story, which followed an interracial couple that married in 1958 and were forced to leave the state of Virginia in violation of the state’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924.

The Lovings were arrested in their own home and sentenced to one year in prison for their relationship, with the sentence suspended on the stipulation that they leave Virginia and do not return for at least 25 years. The Lovings eventually contested the ruling, and the Act and their sentence was unanimously overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967. The module concluded with a group discussion of the film and the momentous court decision.
