Phew! We Made It!

As Dr. Seuss would say, "How Did It Get So Late So Soon?" But, here we are at the end of our Fall Term - already! It seems like just a blink ago that we were holding hands to create our Human Arch. We look forward to the Winter Term and a very fun and festive three weeks in December. Whipple Weekly will return to your inbox on Thursday, December 1st. Safe travels and enjoy Fall Break.

Thank you to our Parents' Association for supplying a table of snacks for both the Middle and Upper School campuses during our three days of final exams. You're the best!!

Pilgrims' Breakfast

Though class was not in session, a series of new and traditional activities and events brought the Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus to life on Friday, November 11. The storied Pilgrims’ Breakfast kicked off the morning, as 44 SSM senior female students reprised the historic Saint Mary’s Hall tradition. The Class of 2017 kept the St. Mary’s Hall tradition of more than 100 years alive by gathering at the Rectory, donning their traditional dress for a special group photo and Chapel service, and joining together for food and fellowship throughout the rest of the morning at The Inn.

Veterans Day and Building Bridges

The full student body gathered in the Johnson Gymnasium last Friday afternoon for a special Veterans Day assembly led by SSM’s own veterans, Director of Enrollment Management Kelly DeShane and Science Instructor and Science Department Chair Dan Ray. Several students recited poetry and read the names of military members that have passed since last Veterans Day, and the SSM Crack Squad led a short demonstration before the playing of Taps.

After the Veterans Day ceremony, students broke off into their Sabre Cup groups to compete in a series of activities as part of the afternoon’s Building Bridges event. The event featured 18 mini-competitions that helped bring students from across the School together in a collaborative and fun environment. The groups were also adjusted to include Middle School students, who participated alongside their older peers. Games included a Jeopardy-style trivia game, a musical chair competition, and a jelly bean tasting contest, among other entertaining events. Festivities concluded with the four highest scoring Sabre Cup groups competing in a tug-of-war contest, with the winning team earning dinner at a Faribault restaurant to be determined during exam week. The afternoon was a great way to cap off the week and lead students into their exam schedules.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s was pleased to host 260 Quiz Bowl players from 24 schools around Minnesota and Wisconsin on Saturday! The tournament had three divisions: Upper School, Underclassmen (9th/10th grade), and Middle School. After nine rounds, Wayzata and Mounds Park Academy won the upper and middle divisions. Our guests were treated to demonstrations by the BioScience and Engineering programs, and tours of the School (which many Harry Potter fans thoroughly enjoyed). Everyone walked away excited about next year’s tournament!

A Proud Day for Girls Hockey

On Tuesday, November 15, nine members of the Girls Hockey Center of Excellence signed their National Letters of Intent in conjunction with the National Signing Day period. Making up one of the biggest signing groups the SSM girls hockey program has seen, it was all smiles for the current teammates as they committed to a combined total of seven Division I colleges.

“This group of seniors has proven the validity of having a ‘growth mindset.’  They are undoubtedly some of the most talented kids we have had in our program, but they will be remembered as much for their work ethic and leadership as they will for all the championships they have won,” said Girls Prep Head Coach and Director of SSM Hockey, Gordie Stafford.

Parker Reddig '17 Commits to Florida State University

On Wednesday, November 9, senior golfer Parker Reddig signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his golfing career at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Reddig, current team captain of the Sabres, looks to make a big impact as he joins the Seminoles in the fall. In his junior golf career so far, Reddig has won over 80 tournaments, including being a two-time champion at the TPC John Deere Junior Classic.

“Signing at FSU is a dream come true for me,” Reddig told “I've always wanted the opportunity to play all year round and now I can while competing against the best golfers from around the world. Along with the coaching staff, my teammates and the facilities offered, I am ready to work to take my game to the next level.”

Good Luck Team Sabres!
Good luck to Team Sabres as they head to Kalamazoo, MI today to participate in the 17th annual Kick-Off Classic Synchronized Skating Competition.
